MGH Center for Community Health Improvement

MGH Center for Community Health Improvement Working together to improve health outcomes for patients and communities we serve.

Good health begins with healthy communities that have access to healthy foods, safe places for children to play, and positive activities for teens. Communities must also have access to a health care system with programs to prevent, screen for, and treat conditions such as asthma, obesity, cancer, domestic violence, and substance abuse. MGH is committed to creating healthy communities in the towns and neighborhoods it serves.

Recently, our 11th grade Youth Scholars had an exciting opportunity to participate in a Mystery Career Panel alongside team members from MGH’s Ragon Building Project and Turner Construction! The Scholars met with team members working in the trades, administration/operations, engineering, architecture, and project management to learn more about their work.

At each station, Scholars asked members of the team a series of questions including what training or career education they received, what machinery they work with, who they work with, and what their day-to-day workdays look like. By piecing the answers and clues together, Scholars guessed each panelist’s career (though they were stumped at a couple of the stations!).

Leslie Aldana, the Community & Citizenship Program Specialist for Turner Construction Company said, “We cannot thank you enough for allowing us to participate in the career panel. The students kept everyone on their toes and asked really engaging questions.”

This career exploration not only broadened students’ understanding of various professions but also introduced them to new career paths they may not have considered before. But this opportunity was not limited to the 11th graders alone! In recent weeks, both the 10th and 12th grade programs also had the chance to interact with employees from Turner. For the second year running, the 10th grade cohort visited the World Trade Center, where they engaged with a diverse group of professionals, learned about their daily routine at the construction site, and discovered the various educational pathways available to them. Just like their 11th-grade counterparts, scholars explored options ranging from trade schools to college degrees and beyond, excitedly contemplating a future brimming with newfound possibility.

Last week, it was a fun and informative school vacation day for some of our Mass General Hospital Youth Programs Youth Scholars.

The Scholars spent the day with Massachusetts General Hospital surgical residents, clinical fellows, and surgeons, learning about their career journeys and more. The students even got to participate in a hands-on suturing workshop in the Simulation Lab.

"I would say something that piqued my interest was when they mentioned summer programs to come in and shadow a doctor. I’d actually like more information about that,” said ninth grader Sophia Vasquez. “I also liked just generally learning the cool knots. It was fun! The surgeons spoke a lot about their experiences and how they got there, so I think it was great for all of us to hear."

Who knows – maybe there are some future surgeons in the group?

Yesterday was an exciting day for the Boston Public Schools, Mass General Brigham, and the students at the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers (EMK)!

Building upon our longstanding partnership with EMK and the BPS, a $37.8 million grant, the largest philanthropic investment in BPS history, was made by Bloomberg Philanthropies. This grant will enable EMK Academy to double in size, add new health career pathways, college courses and work-based learning, and offer graduates access to good-paying careers at Mass General Brigham.

We are excited for everyone involved in this historic investment in our city and our workforce, but most importantly for the students who will be able to take advantage of this life-changing opportunity!

Our annual MGH College Scholars Homecoming event was held this past week at Assembly Row in Somerville. Forty-seven students gathered during their winter break to reconnect with fellow scholars and meet with Accelerated College Experiences (ACE) coaches to discuss strategies for thriving in school and moving out into the workforce.

One highlight on the packed agenda was a presentation by Mass General Hospital president, David Brown, MD, who came to share his own personal and professional experiences along his career journey. He told the scholars that a person’s career is for a short window, so it’s essential for them to identify what is most important in their personal and professional contributions. For him, it has been about his family and making an impact in medicine on a larger scale through Research, Emergency Medicine, his work at Cooley Dickenson, and now in his role at MGH. Dr. Brown shared his memorable experiences at MGH in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon Bombing and leading one of the country’s largest hospitals during the pandemic.

We have the tools we need to create a world where addiction is just one aspect of people’s lives instead of a dark portal to despair and early death.

It was a packed house on Friday morning at the Alternatives to Violence Network monthly breakfast!

MGH’s Sarah Coughlin and Cindy Diggs are working alongside Boston organizations and residents committed to anti-violence in the city--connecting, supporting, strategizing, and sharing resources with each other. Meetings are held monthly, newsletter updates sent out twice a month, and Kelly Washburn from our evaluation team is working on the SUMapp, a social network map aimed at strengthening and building relationships outside of the monthly meetings.

This past week, the group discussed policy and legislative advocacy around gun violence prevention bills and ways to mobilize youth and community residents to get more active politically. We also had time for folks to add their information to the large group map.

This is important but challenging work. We are so grateful to our growing network of colleagues coming together to break bread each month as we work collaboratively on ways to address community violence so that residents, and particularly our youth, can thrive.
