International Emergency Department Leadership Institute

The International Emergency Department Leadership Institute (IEDLI) provides the skills and knowledge

IEDLI is held once a year over a one week period in a different city each year. Four interactive courses are offered consisting of group work, seminars, workshops, and more. Created and taught by Harvard Medical School faculty and other international experts, the IEDLI program will challenge the way you think about the problems facing your Emergency Department. You will explore leadership topics that offer solutions to the challenges of emergency care today. This program is designed for doctors, nurses and hospital administrators.

Taught since 2013, this two-day course explores how design meets process to create successful, well-run emergency departments. The course holds active discussions among medical, administrative, and architectural professionals on contemporary thinking about designs that promote engagement with the patient, patient safety and comfort, and a high degree of efficiency. Case studies of effective ED design will be explored and attendees will complete a group project to put concept into practice.

The responsibility for clinician wellness in emergency medicine cannot rest solely on individual practitioners. While self-care strategies like mindfulness, exercise, and work-life balance are valuable, placing the burden primarily on clinicians to "fix themselves" ignores the systemic factors that drive burnout and moral injury.
