Hombres on the Mend

Hombres on the Mend Over the years, I have dealt with bouts of depression, burnout, anxiety, and just feeling like I had no purpose and no sense of direction in my life.

Hombres on the Mend was created to help share insights, resources, and personal narratives dedicated to exploring the multifaceted landscape of men's mental health, with a particular focus on the experiences within the Latino community and beyond. As a Latino man, I have spent most of my life living with the stigma that there are more important things to worry about or focus my energy on than deal

ing with those feelings that live underneath the surface. Those who know me have seen a version of me who is always smiling, enjoys being the life of the party, and places an emphasis on making those around me happy. However, behind that smile, I have maneuvered through life on a path full of emotional obstacles. Anxiety, like an unwelcome guest, has often accompanied me on this journey of self-discovery for many years. I experienced this unsettling feeling I never quite understood for many years. Rather than face the uncertainty of what I was feeling, I decided to tuck those feelings deep inside at the fear that if I spoke about them out loud, I might be considered weak, or even worse somebody would judge me or ridicule me for having such feelings as a man.

Dads, this one’s for us.

With the world in constant motion—families torn apart by mass deportations, our LGBTQ loved ones fighting simply to exist, and living in a world surround by turmoil —it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The weight of it all can quietly chip away at our mental health, even as we shoulder the role of guide, protector, and example for our kids.

So today, on Father’s Day, I want to honor every dad who keeps showing up:

• The dad comforting anxious kids while hiding his own worries.
• The dad standing up for friends whose rights are under attack.
• The dad holding his family together across borders and time zones.

Your effort matters. Your presence matters. And your mental health matters just as much as the people you care for.

Take a breath. Reach out. Talk to a friend, a counselor, or a brother who gets it. We can’t pour from an empty cup, and our kids learn resilience by watching us practice it.

Happy Father’s Day! Let’s keep lifting each other up and strengthening our communities, as now more than ever we all need to lean on each other💙

Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Month.

For me, this month is a reminder of how far I’ve come in my own journey—yet it also reminds me of how much further we still need to go in breaking the stigma around mental health.

I’ve had to learn that being mindful of my emotions, asking for help, and supporting others isn’t weakness—it’s strength.

Mental health is just as real and important as physical health.

Let’s use this month to check in with ourselves and each other.

Let’s speak up, listen deeply, and hold space for healing.

You’re not alone. You’re not a burden. You matter.

Mental health struggles are not a one size fits all type of issue. In fact, most people you walk by on the street could be facing struggles behind a smile that we may never even know about until it’s too late.

It’s been a few months since I’ve really pushed through any content through Hombres on the Mend and it’s not because I’ve given up on the cause or don’t have it in me to push forward an initiative I started last year and strongly believe in. I’ve been in “mental health hibernation” for the last few months focusing on working through my own struggles I face with anxiety, the overwhelming pressures of work, the ongoing struggles with understanding family dynamics and the ability to show up and be the best version of myself for my wife, while most importantly putting myself FIRST. It’s been a struggle, like walking a tightrope over an infinite abyss of emptiness and fear.

As Spring arrives here in Boston and the weather warms up and nature around us comes back to life so does my resilience to continue shining a spotlight on the ongoing issues men face in silence when it comes to their mental health. These winter months were a good reminder that sometimes we just have to close the doors and windows, bundle up and pay attention to what our hearts, minds and guts are telling us to do, which in most cases is to SLOW down and focus on our own wellbeing.

This picture is a gentle reminder that we should not overlook even the smallest of details, like Toby always being able to sense when something is slightly off with me and always willing to lend a paw and share his unconditional love with me, reminding me, I got this and I’m going to be ok 💪🏽.

I look forward to revitalizing and bringing Hombres on the Mend back even better and stronger than before! I can’t thank you all enough as well for the continued support!

The wildfires raging across our communities have left a trail of unimaginable loss and heartbreak. For me, it also hit close to home as the Palisades impacted the very place I grew up around, destroying homes, memories, and the safety so many families once felt.

To those who have lost everything: I am deeply sorry and know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Words can’t capture the pain you’re feeling, but please know that you’re not alone.

In the midst of this devastation, the toll on mental health and our general wellbeing can feel just completely overwhelming. Stress, anxiety, and grief are real and valid reactions to disasters like these.

Here are a few steps to help cope during this difficult time:

🌟 Acknowledge your emotions: It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Take time to process your feelings.

🌟 LEAN IN on your community: Share your thoughts with loved ones or join support groups. We are stronger together.

🌟 Limit exposure to triggering news: Stay informed but give yourself permission to step away if it feels too much.

🌟 Seek help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to counselors or mental health professionals for support.

For those of us who have not been impacted and may be able to help, consider donating to local relief funds or organizations assisting families in need. Every small action can make a big difference.

Stay strong LA, our hearts are with you during these difficult times!

Please feel free to share any available resources in the comments.

🎄 The holidays are here, and for many it includes all of the emotions that may come along with the festivities.

The holiday season can be joyful but also overwhelming. Recognizing the symptoms of anxiety and stress is the first step to managing them.

💡 Common Symptoms:

• Difficulty concentrating
• Physical symptoms like headaches or muscle tension

💡 Ways to Cope:
1️⃣ Set Boundaries: It’s okay to say no to events or commitments that feel too much.
2️⃣ Stick to a Budget: Financial stress can weigh heavily—create a plan and prioritize meaningful gifts or gestures.
3️⃣ Practice Self-Care: Make time for activities that recharge you, like walking, meditating, or reading.
4️⃣ Reach Out: Talk to loved ones about your feelings or seek professional support if needed.

First and foremost we have to acknowledge that it’s ok to not be ok. For many this election cycle was one filled with deep anxiety and uncertainty over what the future would hold for us. For many the upcoming days will be filled with concerns over what the next 4 years will hold for the US. It’s important to remember that through it all we are also responsible for taking care of our own well being, including our mental health. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with a million thoughts of an unknown and uncertain future, but I encourage you all to take it one day at a time. Process those feelings and unplug (if you can) even for a day to give your mind an opportunity to decompress. Be kind to yourselves and more importantly remember that while we may be ok others may not be, so days like today are when we need to unite as a community and support those that may be struggling in silence. Stay strong!

It’s ! Did you know that Movember is an annual campaign held in November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, primarily focusing on mental health, su***de prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. The name “Movember” combines “moustache” and “November,” reflecting the campaign’s tradition of encouraging men to grow moustaches throughout the month as a visible symbol of support.

Although there isn’t a specific month where mental health impacts us more than another, this month, it’s important to shine a brighter light on things that impact men’s health such mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer among other serious health concerns.

Did you know? Men worldwide face health challenges every day, and we lose 60 men to su***de every hour. This Movember, let’s stand together to break the stigma and support each other. 💙💪

Join me in making a change! Whether it’s a donation, a conversation, or a commitment to support men in your life, every action counts. Remember a simple check-in can make all the difference.

In times of uncertainty, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important aspects of self-care: our mental health.

With anxiety levels rising, especially as the upcoming election stirs more questions than answers, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. But let’s take a breath and remember—we can only tackle one thing at a time.

Prioritize moments of calm and focus on what’s within your control. Take care of yourself first.

In recognition of World Mental Health Day, let’s take a moment to prioritize what truly matters—our mental well-being.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s okay to seek help, take breaks, and practice self-care. For those that may be out there struggling alone or in silence remember, you’re never alone in this journey. Let’s support one another, raise awareness, and continue breaking the stigma.

I’ve been struggling over the last several weeks to find the strength to keep pushing through the challenges that I continue to face on my mental health journey. That being said, being in nature, unplugged helped me refocus on the things that matter most.

Sometimes in life all we can do is take a deep breath, unplug and focus on the things that bring us peace.

For all the men out there dealing with mental health issues just remember, it’s ok to not be ok, be kind to yourselves and remember that sometimes no matter how hopeless life feels like, we have to focus on doing the things that mean the most to us.

I created Hombres on the Mend for the sole purpose of creating a community that embraced vulnerability in a world where being vulnerable is a scary thing.

As a Latino man trying to embrace the intricacies of what getting in touch with not only my inner child but all of the emotional elements I’ve been afraid to embrace over the years this post resonates so much to me as these are feelings and emotions I dealt with and have continued to deal with. However, that being said I have embraced the idea that it’s ok not to be ok and that there are other men out there that are fighting the same battle. We all have our own story and our own journey we are trying to work through and embrace, however, together we can work through the stigma of men’s mental health.
