May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As a mental health professional and a person with mental health issues myself, this is personal to me.
First thing we need to do is reduce the stigma. I got mental health issues. I talk about it all the time. If a student asks me, we talk through how to cope, and how many of us don't (we stare at our phones, use drugs & alcohol, buy s**t we don't need online, etc.)
For the first time this year, I'm joining this incredible organization, American Foundation for Su***de Prevention in their "Overnight" walk. It's the coolest idea - you begin the walk at dusk (it's dark) and thousands of us walk in solidarity until the light comes (dawn). What an apt metaphor - we cannot get to the light until we move forward and actively seek it!
They have set the ambitious goal of a 20% reduction in su***des by 2025. Wow. Maybe that's why I have to raise $1000. Sounds like a lot, but the problem really IS that bad. And the vast majority are men. Tough and stubborn, men suffer in silence and often die the same way.
We gotta change this - it's an epidemic. Will you do me the honor of joining me with a donation of $10, $20, or more? If this $1000 can save just one life, it would be a miracle. Thanks for considering it!
