Last week, more than 100 nurses and nursing leaders from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital attended Karsh Nursing Scholars Day, which was held as a full-day conference at Assembly Row for the first time.
The event highlighted the many innovative initiatives underway in the Departments of Nursing at both hospitals through posters and podium presentations. Participants heard an inspiring keynote speech from Dan Weberg, PhD, RN, about the important role of nurses in innovation, how to nurture a culture that supports innovation and how to get started by branching outside your comfort zone.
Podium presentations were delivered by the following Brigham nurses:
• Nomvelo Blackstock, MSN, RN, CNL, AMB-BC: “Improving Elevated Blood Pressure Remeasurement Rates in Primary Care: A Team-Based Approach”
• Krystin Montoya, BSN, RN: “Silverlon Patch Use in BWH VAD Driveline Dressing Kits”
• Diane Bryant, MS, RN, CWOCN, and Wadia Gilles-Fowler, BSN, RN: “Innovative Hospital Ostomy Peer Visitor Program”
Nurses also had the opportunity to work in small groups to problem-solve during a mini hackathon facilitated by Weberg and Hiyam Nadel, MBA, CCG, RN, FIEL, director of the Center for Innovations in Care Delivery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Helene Bowen Brady, DNP, MEd, RN, NEA-BC, NPD-BC, a nurse scientist at BWFH who is retiring, was honored during the event for her contributions to BWFH, to nurses nationally and to the profession.
