🌍 Earth Day 2026

The health of our planet = the health of our children.

From the air they breathe to the places they live, learn, and play—environment matters. And for children, those impacts can last a lifetime.

At Region 1 PEHSU, we’re working every day to:
🌱 Support clinicians
🌱 Educate families
🌱 Promote healthier environments across New England

Because protecting kids starts with protecting their world.

đź’¬ This Earth Day, take a moment to reflect:
What’s one small change you can make to support a healthier environment for children?

Boston Children’s Hospital Pediatric Environmental Health Center and the Region 1 New England Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Health, Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health and the Boston Children’s Hospital Center for Educational Excellence and Innovation developed the Environmental Health Hazards E-Learning Series with individual modules on Heavy Metals in Baby Food and Formula, PFAS (Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) and Mercury in Locally Caught Fish. The learning series is available for free or for CE credit. Each module provides clinicians and public health professionals with the resources to identify at-risk populations, assess exposure and health risks, and provide guidance on how to minimize exposure. Each module is designed to be self-paced and should take learners approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Attn Health Professionals:

We don’t usually think of high blood pressure as a childhood issue.

But what if the story begins before kindergarten?

Air pollution - Toxic metals - PFAS

Growing evidence from birth cohort studies shows these early exposures may influence children’s blood pressure and obesity risk.

The big question we’ll be asking at Grand Rounds:

How do we protect children from exposures that have already happened?

January is Radon Awareness Month

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, water and rock—and it can build up inside homes, schools, and workplaces without anyone knowing.

🔹 Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.
🔹 Children may be at higher risk due to smaller lungs, higher breathing rates and more time spent indoors
🔹 The only way to know your radon level is to test

The good news?
✔️ Testing is simple and affordable
✔️ Radon exposure is preventable
✔️ Fixing the cause of radon will reduce radon levels and the risk of exposure

This Radon Awareness Month, we encourage families, schools, childcare centers, and healthcare providers to test indoor spaces to protect children’s health—today and for the future.
