January is Radon Awareness Month

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, water and rock—and it can build up inside homes, schools, and workplaces without anyone knowing.

🔹 Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.
🔹 Children may be at higher risk due to smaller lungs, higher breathing rates and more time spent indoors
🔹 The only way to know your radon level is to test

The good news?
✔️ Testing is simple and affordable
✔️ Radon exposure is preventable
✔️ Fixing the cause of radon will reduce radon levels and the risk of exposure

This Radon Awareness Month, we encourage families, schools, childcare centers, and healthcare providers to test indoor spaces to protect children’s health—today and for the future.

Saying farewell to a respected and accomplished colleague is never easy.

The Region 1 PEHSU has been truly fortunate to collaborate with Ann Backus, an exceptional public health professional and dedicated advocate. After more than three decades of service at the Harvard School of Public Health, Ann is embarking on new endeavors beyond Harvard. On September 19, Region 1 PEHSU Co-Director Dr. Marissa Hauptman and HSPH colleague, Dr. Gary Adamkiewicz, attended the NIEHS Center Retreat, which honored Ann’s outstanding contributions and lasting impact.

Ann will be deeply missed by our team. She has been a valued partner in advancing environmental health, and we look forward to future opportunities to work alongside her. What is certain is that Ann Backus will continue to make remarkable contributions to the fields of occupational medicine and environmental health.
