Born into slavery near Norfolk, Virginia to an enslaved mother of mixed African and American Indian descent and a Caucasian father, William Roscoe Davis learned to read and write at a young age. He would run a pleasure boat operation and was able to keep most of his earnings, a rare opportunity for the period. Davis followed the footsteps of many as a freedom seeker to in 1861. Talented and charismatic, Davis’ character, piety, and eloquence led him to a measure of fame. Lewis Lockwood of the American Missionary Association wrote that Davis was able to make “a masterpiece [address, that] melted every heart.” He became a salaried speaker for , father of the Uncle Tom’s Cabin author , for more than a year in northern states fundraising to support African refugees during the . Davis would later become a pastor and be elected the Doorkeeper of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Constitutional Convention, 1867-68. In 1870, Davis returned to the as the Light Keeper of the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse for 8 years, tending the beacon of freedom that shone the way guiding many freedom seekers to and a new life.
