In her fifties, Lisa suddenly found herself homeless after fleeing an abusive marriage. For months, she hid her situation, feeling embarrassed as she moved between a friend's room and her daughter's couch.

Finding Hearth was a turning point. Through Hearth’s housing placement services, Lisa secured an affordable apartment and the stability she needed to heal and thrive. Today, her health has improved, and she works as the night manager of her building, hoping to help other women who face similar struggles.

Stories like Lisa's demonstrate the profound impact of a stable home. This work isn’t possible alone. Join us for our Annual Gala on October 16th to support our mission of ending elderly homelessness. Your presence helps us write the next success story.

People aged 50 and over now make up nearly half of the homeless population nationwide. For many, this is the first time they've faced such instability, often after a lifetime of working and raising families.

Hearth takes a compassionate approach centered on three pillars: housing, outreach, and prevention. We don’t just offer a beginning; we provide the long-lasting support services that help older adults rebuild their lives with dignity.

Your support makes this life-changing work possible. Help us offer a stable home to an older adult in need by donating today: hearth-home.org/donatetoday

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

This quote from Helen Keller perfectly captures the spirit needed to address older adult homelessness. It is a solvable crisis, but it requires all of us together.

In her August CEO Corner, our President and CEO, Rhonda Pieroni, discusses how inspiring action goes beyond donations. It's about changing perceptions, checking on our neighbors, and advocating for a future where everyone can age with dignity.

Our Outreach team had a wonderful time connecting with the community at the New Beginnings Reentry Services Resource Fair this weekend. Thank you New Beginnings Reentry Services, Inc. for hosting such an important event and for having us there to share information about our housing, outreach, and prevention services for older adults.

For too many older adults in our community, the threat of homelessness is real and growing. In Boston, the population of unhoused older adults increased from 15% to more than 24% between 2013 and 2023. Nationally, 2.35 million older adult households are paying more than half of their limited income on rent, placing them at extreme risk.

These aren't just numbers; they represent our neighbors. Hearth is on the front lines providing solutions through permanent housing, dedicated outreach, and critical prevention services. We believe everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

Please share this post to help raise awareness for our older neighbors.

Every year, the Hearth Gala gathers a powerful community of supporters to sustain and expand our vital work. This year, we are proud to present the Anna Bissonnette Award to Dr. Howard K. Koh of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His lifelong dedication to public health and uplifting the most vulnerable mirrors Hearth's own mission.

Join us at Venezia Restaurant Boston for an evening of action and commitment to ending older adult homelessness.

“I was homeless in the streets, you know, going from couch to couch.”

Walter’s description of his past is a candid reminder of the instability that too many older adults face. The day he moved into his Hearth apartment was a turning point. Now, he enjoys going for walks, participating in art classes, and connecting with his neighbors. These activities are all made possible by the security of a home.

A new study highlighted in JAMA Internal Medicine reveals a staggering public health crisis: people experiencing homelessness are nearly 30 times more likely to need emergency care for heat-related illness than housed adults. As summer temperatures rise, this danger becomes more urgent, particularly for older adults. Hearth's work in providing supportive housing is a direct response, offering older adults the safety and stability they need to stay healthy.
