Today is International Albinism Awareness Day. Albinism is a genetic disorder caused by both parents, affecting people of all ethnicities and genders worldwide. According to the United Nations, in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 5,000 people has albinism, while in Europe and North America, the ratio is 1 in 20,000. Albinism patients lack melanin in their hair, skin, and eyes, making them vulnerable to sunlight, which can lead to skin cancer and severe vision problems. Providing free/subsidized sunscreen and sun-protective clothing, improving skin screening, and offering vision aids can significantly enhance their health and quality of life.
