The ADA Title II deadline just got extended; here's what that actually means.
On April 20, 2026, the DOJ published an Interim Final Rule pushing both compliance dates back by one year. Public entities with populations of 50,000+ now have until April 26, 2027, while smaller entities and special districts have until April 26, 2028.
What didn't change: the 2024 rule, the WCAG 2.1 Level AA standard, and your organization's underlying legal obligations under Title II, Title III, and Section 504.
If your program is already scoped and mid-execution, unwinding that momentum is expensive in ways that rarely show up on a budget line. Procurement cycles restart, vendors get redirected, and institutional knowledge evaporates when teams get reassigned.
Treat the new deadline as the latest date you'll finish, not the date you'll start.
