In a recent feature on WCVB Channel 5’s Chronicle, elite runner David Proctor shared his experience recovering from an eating disorder during his time as a Boston University track and field athlete.

Working closely with Sargent College nutrition professor Paula Quatromoni over five years as both an undergraduate and graduate student, David was able to rebuild a healthy relationship with fueling, performance, and his body. Their long-term work together supported his recovery and helped shape the athlete he is today.

The segment also highlights an important reality: about one in three people with an eating disorder in the U.S. is male, and athletes often face unique pressures where body weight and performance are closely linked.

Today, the Sargent Choice Nutrition Center continues this work, supporting BU student-athletes with nutrition guidance and fueling stations, while also serving all BU Students through comprehensive nutrition resources designed to help the community stay strong and healthy!

Allison Aaron, a doctoral candidate in the BU SLHS PhD program, recently published an article on her work in the Stepp Lab! Allison's work tested whether the duration of vocalizations and the amount of rest between them influence how someone learns a new vocal behavior. Her study found that longer vocalizations and more rest time between vocalizations can positively influence vocal motor learning!
