CoolTone is a new FDA-cleared device that tones and strengthens the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. This electromagnetic device, developed by the makers of Coolsculpting, safely transmits through the skin to selectively target only the muscle layer, causing muscle contractions similar to those during exercise, but at a much higher and more effective intensity. The body’s response to these contractions is to strengthen muscle fibers and improve muscle conditioning resulting in more defined musculature.

It can also be added in combination with Coolsculpting treatments to address noninvasive fat removal and muscle strengthening at the same visit to achieve even better results for patients seeking body contouring and slimming. is one of the few select sites around the country to offer the pre-commercial device, and the only center in Massachusetts that has this technology available for our patients.

Aesthetic procedures are elective and defined by personal choices. Some patients desire a completely wrinkle free appearance, while others (such as myself) prefer to keep lines of expression. Regardless of your personal preferences, there are more treatments available than ever before to achieve the result that best suits you. When choosing a physician, be careful to select one with outstanding credentials and experience to personalize your aesthetic experience.

Congratulations to on being lead author on our paper reviewing the myriad of laws governing laser surgery in the United States. This paper was the most downloaded study published in LASERS IN SURGERY & MEDICINE in 2018. As a former attorney, it amazes and frightens me the extent to which current laws are contradictory and do not do a better job of protecting patients. The skill of the laser operator who can legally treat patients often differs vastly state to state. Be sure to carefully research whoever treats your face with these powerful devices. Too often, completely preventative permanent scar and disfigurement can result.

Honored to be the Invited Speaker at the Quinsigamond Society Grand Rounds for the Department of Dermatology at University of Massachusetts. I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with these highly impressive residents discussing cases, giving my off the record perspective on our field, and providing advice regarding career paths. My main lecture featured medical advances in dermatology and laser technologies that are not currently available for patient care. Many of these advances are being developed at MGH and will transform our field in the next few years.

A very busy few days at ASLMS included 7 lectures, two abstracts, a poster and several interviews. There was a lot of exciting innovations at the meeting including some that we are developing at MGH. Best of all was connecting with my friends, colleagues and former fellows and residents.
