This photo shows 13-year-old Barbara Kent and her friends playing in a river near Ruidoso, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. They were laughing, splashing, and cooling off under what they thought was falling snow.
But it wasn’t snow. It was radioactive fallout from the world’s first atomic bomb test, the Trinity explosion, which had taken place just 40 miles away that morning.
The children had no idea. They played in the ash as it drifted down, warm to the touch. “We thought it was snow,” Barbara later said. “But instead of being cold like snow, it was hot.”
No one warned the towns nearby. No one was evacuated. Fallout rained down for days, coating homes, fields, and rivers.
Barbara Kent was the only child in this photo who lived to see her 30th birthday.

A tiny Moon making massive waves in the massive rings of Saturn.

If you think you're too small to make an impact, look at Daphnis. A tiny speck of dust causing 1.5-mile high waves in a ring system 175,000 miles wide.

This is an absolutely stunning, 1.85" long example of the rare, tower-eye Erbenochile erbeni trilobite from Foum Zguid, Morocco. The preparation is truly top-tier, showcasing flawless, fully preserved eye facets in both eyes and dozens of delicate, free-standing spines.

Trilobites of the genus Erbenochile are among the most visually striking arthropods of the Devonian, famed for their extraordinary compound eyes. Each eye tower is composed of more than 400 individual facets, forming a sweeping dome that granted the animal an unmatched field of view. These massive optical structures provided full 360° horizontal coverage, and were tall enough to allow the trilobite to peer backward over its own thorax—a remarkable evolutionary advantage in the predator-rich seafloor ecosystems of the time.

“Black Beauty,” one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever discovered, offers a remarkable window into the life and death of this iconic predator. The fossil preserves the dinosaur in an exceptional death pose, with tail, limbs, and skull arranged in lifelike detail, allowing scientists to study muscle attachment, posture, and biomechanics. Its bones display extraordinary preservation, including fine textures, fractures, and wear patterns that reveal insights into growth, injuries, and physical adaptations.

Analysis indicates that T. rex maintained agility and strength despite its size, using massive jaws and robust limbs to hunt or scavenge effectively. The death pose also provides clues about the circumstances of its demise, possibly indicating post-mortem muscle contraction, burial conditions, or rapid sediment coverage that contributed to preservation.

This discovery matters because it enhances understanding of T. rex anatomy, behavior, and ecology. By studying Black Beauty, researchers can compare skeletal features with other specimens, reconstruct movement and predatory strategies, and refine knowledge of Late Cretaceous ecosystems. The completeness of the skeleton makes it one of the most valuable fossils for research and education.

Black Beauty endures as both a scientific treasure and a vivid reminder of prehistoric life. Its preserved form connects modern audiences to a world of giants, showcasing evolution, power, and survival in a vanished era.
