Boulder Birth

Boulder Birth What is a nurse midwife? Nurse midwives focus on education about pregnancy, the birth process and post-partum period with the goal of empowering women.

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) provide health care involving emotional and physical support to women before, during, and after childbirth. They are educated in two disciplines: nursing and midwifery. Midwife literally means "with woman" and nurse midwives believe in being present throughout the labor process. Nurse midwives follow a long established tradition of dedicated, warm and competent care. CNMs have graduated from an accredited education program and passed a national certification exam. They work collaboratively with physicians, who are available for consultation and referral if necessary.

I've received several requests via messenger for contact information for the new midwifery practice in Boulder (UC Health). They are open and taking new patients. You can choose from the Boulder, Erie, or Firestone clinic. The scheduling number is the same for all clinics: 720-494-3128
You will be in great hands. It is a great group of midwives and physicians!

I was just told the greatest news! A new, local nurse midwifery practice will start seeing patients in Boulder, Firestone and Longmont clinics in 2017!! This is a CU owned midwifery practice and the midwives will attend births at the new Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont. I will post more information as I have it. Spread the word! I'm sure it will be successful.

I have accepted a per diem position at Rose Midwifery and will be working in Denver 2-3 days per week. I love the group of midwives, my back up OB MD, Steve Holt!, and Rose Hospital. Keep in touch and if you are in the Denver area stop by and say hello! I have also recently been credentialed in Longmont at Longmont United Hospital. I currently am not attending births in Longmont but will post more details as this opportunity unfolds!

Thank you Boulder Community Hospital Nurses (Margie and Karen for organizing)and staff (and Charlie!) and also Bonnie S. and Lisa W. for the wonderful goodbye breakfast yesterday. It was hard to say goodbye to people who I have worked with for 14 years. Please keep in touch. I will miss you all and wish you the best! Much love to you all. Merrilynn

On Friday, we announced that our clinic will be closing 11/15/14. Kala and Erin will join BWC and continue to provide midwifery care through a new MD/CNM model.
We are heavy-hearted in sharing this news with all of you. Thank you all for the support you have extended to us during this time of transition. While we look forward to new changes and midwifery offerings in our community, we all grieve the closing of this lovely gem of a practice.
I came to BNM 7 years ago as a pregnant mama with my first-born. I immediately recognized how special it was and to work for Merrilynn as an RN shortly after his birth. It was this practice that inspired me to go back to school and pursue my dream of becoming a nurse-midwife. It was these amazing midwives who taught me and it was this amazing community who extended me your support and acceptance. I too am grieving the closing of this incredibly special 7 year chapter of my life.
Every birth I have attended with Boulder Nurse-Midwives has been an honor. Every birth, every one of you, has touched me and reminded me how important and precious this work is. My heart has been filled with love and gratitude and I thank each one of you for allowing me to be a part of your pregnancy and birth.
What's next for me; first a pause, a breath, time to reflect. I will travel to Haiti for 2 weeks this winter to volunteer with Midwives for Haiti: another dream coming to fruition. My career as a nurse-midwife is only just beginning.
I love being in connection with this amazing community! Please stay in touch with me at susanmitchell8@gmail.com
Love and blessings, Susan

I apologize for the late reply. (I wrote this on Sunday and thought it had posted!) I have been on call for the past 24 hours and had the honor of attending another beautiful birth at 4 am this morning!

The decision was made last Friday to close our clinic at 4800 Riverbend Road Suite 150 as of November 15th, 2014 We thank everyone in our community for the loving and kind support. There will be an opportunity for women to follow Kala and Erin to Boulder Women's Care. This is a combined midwife and physician practice where you may see a midwife or physician for your visit and also for your birth. If you have questions please feel free to contact me by phone or email. Women who are currently patients will receive a phone call and letter next week. It has been such a pleasure to work in this community. I feel grateful and have learned so much. Much love, Merrilynn

Dear Boulder Birth Community, I know there is a lot of rumor spreading about our midwifery practice closing its doors. We are not closing at this time. For those of you who are not aware, we are a group of CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives) who deliver at an in-hospital Birth Center at Boulder Community Health. We have delivered over 2,600 babies and have a less than 10% Cesarean Section rate. We have good physicians who we work with and Boulder Nurse Midwives has been in this community since 2007! Life brings changes and we are in a transition period at this time trying to figure out how we can be sustainable and healthy for the long term. We should have more information next week as to how we plan to proceed with our practice and if we are going to be able to provide care to women in Boulder under our current model of care and we will also update you on any changes that may be taking place. I appreciate everyone's support and concern. You have all been amazing! We are working hard on finding solutions and I feel confident that an "in-hospital birth center" option with Certified Nurse Midwives will be available to women in this community and it will be better and stronger than ever.

I have learned so much from all of the wonderful Mamas and babies I have come in contact with. Thank you for being a part of my family.
