Huge thanks to Brian Buckner CFJ for an eye-opening talk on the Genius of the Horse’s Hoof 🐎💡

Here are just a few key takeaways from your insightful lecture:

Conformation matters! A narrow base places more pressure on the outer foot, while an over-at-the-knee horse puts excess weight on the toes.

Think 2WD truck: The front end steers, the hind end powers. The front tends to break laterally; the hind more medially.

The hoof is dynamic. It expands and contracts with every step—this is critical to function and health.

Blood flow is key. Areas of the hoof that receive less blood flow simply don’t grow as well.

Muscle-tendon-bone connection: The Deep Digital Flexor tendon connects to the back of the coffin bone. Any issue in the muscle affects the tendon, the bone, and ultimately the shape of the hoof.
