Uncertainty is uncomfortable.

Seeing things as complex rather than black and white takes energy and intention.

And yet, I can think of very little that is certain, simple, or black and white.

Nuance is essential.

When we are trying to control the uncontrollable, or blaming ourselves for things outside our control, everything can feel heavy and brittle.

When we put down what’s not ours to carry and accept the truth of the moment, there is room for levity.

There is room to connect.
There is room to smile.

We want the best for our kids, so it’s easy to feel like we fall short as parents. But, you are already enough. Nobody knows your child like you do. Nobody loves them quite like you do. You are you, and that is enough.

We often feel like self-care is self-indulgent...like we are taking something away from the people we love if we spend some time on ourselves instead of them.

Fortunately, that’s not how it works!

When you keep giving away everything you’ve got, you get burnt out. It’s hard to pour much from an empty bucket.

When you take some time to invest in yourself upfront, though, you are refilling the bucket. What if you took such good care of yourself that you were overflowing with resources to offer?

Join me and the community for Self Compassionate Parenting workshop on Sunday March 2 from 9-1 MT (in person or virtual) to find ways to fill your bucket by
• being kinder to yourself,
• connect with your child and
• reclaim joy in your parenting journey

I sometimes (okay, often), fall into the trap of seeing the gap between my kids’ current reality and their potential. It doesn’t feel good for any of us.

Do I live up to my potential every day?

Absolutely not! Offering myself compassion for the days I’m not at my best makes it so much easier to do the same for them. Cutting all of us a little slack feels so much better.

Join me for Self-Compassionate Parenting workshop on Sunday, March 2, from 9-1 MT (in person or virtual). This workshop, hosted with will help you:

• Be kinder to yourself in parenting
• Connect with your child as they are, not who you think they should be
• Reclaim the joy in your parenting journey

Let’s see the potential, embrace imperfection, and show up with love as we fill the gap and live where we are.

Of course we want to “get it right” and set our kids up for success. But, if we’re constantly nagging and “improving” them, we are not connecting with them. Can we let the little things go, so we can build the kind of relationship with them we to need to get through the big things?

Your kids don’t need a polished version of you. In fact, they don’t want that. They want YOU. If you’re feeling silly, be silly. If you’re sad, be sad. If you’re exhausted, skip cooking and eat cereal for dinner. And, if your kid goes off script, or uses a little salty language, or has a hard day, try going with it. Be human together.

There is a running joke in our family that mom and dad are going to order cappuccinos. My children love food and enjoy a nice meal out.

But, they don’t like to linger after the meal is done.

My husband and I love that time. As a compromise, we started ordering cappuccinos when the kids would order dessert, so we could have our moment without impacting them too much.

Invariably, every time we have tried this, the drinks come out right as the kids have finished scarfing down their sweets and they have to wait.

And yet, we just keep trying...
