Dr. Evan Katz, DC, and Dr. Ross Hauser discuss treatment strategies and the challenges associated with loss of cervical curve, upper cervical instability, and why focusing on only one vertebra often does not appear to produce the best patient outcomes.

In this conversation, we draw from more than 20 years of clinical experience along with published research from both of our teams to explore a more comprehensive approach aimed at improving results for patients.

Why is an ACL tear universally treated like a lifelong plot twist, but a neck ligament injury after a car crash gets written off like a minor typo?
Same concept—ligaments stretched or torn—but suddenly when it’s the neck (you know, casually supporting your head and protecting your central nervous system), the narrative flips to: “You’ll be fine in 6–12 weeks… probably.”
So the knee gets respect, rehab, and long-term expectations…
but the neck gets skepticism, a deadline, and side-eye?
Strange how anatomy is crystal clear—until liability enters the chat.

She spent over $1 million trying to fix her neck…
…and most providers only focused on one bone.

One segment. One adjustment. One limited view.

Meanwhile, her symptoms persisted.

When we evaluated her using pre- and post Digital Motion X-ray (DMX), the findings were clear:

Multi-level instability—not just upper cervical
Significant sagittal plane distortion
Abnormal motion patterns missed on static imaging

This is the problem.

You cannot reduce a complex biomechanical system to a single segment and expect lasting outcomes.

Ignoring sagittal alignment means ignoring:

Load distribution
Ligament integrity
Global spinal mechanics

And when treatment is based on incomplete models or claims not well-supported in the literature, patients pay the price—sometimes literally.
