We are having a busy weekend here, in BioServe’s Payload Operations Control Center. Saturday morning, we operated a remote controlled Keyence microscope, to image cells from the Cancer in Low Earth Orbit (CLEO-3) investigation. Simultaneously, we assisted the crew as they performed a media exchange on muscle cells, in the Life Sciences Glovebox Glovebox, for the Myogenesis investigation. This morning, we are again imaging CLEO-3 and imaging the M4D payload.

Some exciting space research news was just announced at the ISS Research and Development Conference!

Three of the five research teams, selected to develop and fly their cancer research investigations, intend to work with BioServe Space Technologies, who will provide engineering and logistical support to prepare the projects for spaceflight and successful operations on station.

The ISS National Lab and NASA BPS have announced the projects eligible to launch R&D to the ISS through the inaugural Igniting Innovation solicitation.

Here is a look at the people, behind the scenes and the hardware being put together, in preparation for NG-21.

Support hardware kits have been built, circuit cards designed, soldered and calibrated. Bioreactors have been assembled. We are ready to grow stem cells on ISS.

In this investigation, BioServe aims to develop a novel stem cell expansion bioreactor (BICEP) and protocols for its use in space. BICEP will leverage BioServe’s proven hardware from past missions for various cell and tissue culture investigations while complying with federal and industry standards. Following validation in this first phase, the team plans to build upon this work through future investigations on the space station. This project was selected through NASA’s 2022 InSPA Research Announcement and was sponsored by the ISS National Lab.

Calling all Colorado Middle School Teachers!📣
Excite and engage your students with the wonders of microgravity!🦠🚀🛰️🧑‍🚀

Apply to join the 2024 Microgravity Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers at University of Colorado Boulder.

Selected in-service Colorado middle school teachers will learn about the physical concepts underlying microgravity in simple terms. Teachers will also be trained on hands-on activities that bring microgravity and real research data for the ISS into the classroom! After fully participating, teachers can receive up to a $200 stipend. Travel assistance is also available to those who qualify.

🗓️Date: Wednesday, July 17th
⏰Time: 8am-5pm MDT
🗺️Location: University of Colorado Boulder

Applications for the summer 2024 Microgravity SIMST are now open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The final day to submit an application is June 28, 2024 at 11:59pm MDT.

Bioserve is continuing to operate the Gaucho Lung experiment hardware it designed and manufactured, for researchers at the University of California. We are seeing very interesting fluid dynamics in microgravity.

This research could lead to improved drug delivery, and ultimately, a higher treatment success rate for those suffering from breathing problems.

Ever struggle with a little mildew on your fridge seal? BioServe-supported researchers have been characterizing the effects of microbial growth on materials commonly used in the production of spacecraft. The last of these Bacterial Adhesion and Corrosion samples are about to return from the ISS!

Bacterial Adhesion and Corrosion uses one of many cell culture systems BioServe has produced and flown over the years.
