It's Tooth Fairy Day!
There are many different myths around the world that are similar to the American Tooth Fairy, including burying a baby tooth for success later in life (Afghanistan), leaving a tooth in a box for a magical mouse (Mexico), and putting a tooth in a glass for a small gift or coin (Argentina).
But how did this myth come to be?
The Tooth Fairy we know today was inspired by a couple cultural myths, the good fairy and the legend of the tooth deity mouse (In fact, there are a few countries that celebrate both myths to this day, like Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium). Both personas, while relatively modern (beginning between the 17th and 19th centuries), have ties to ancient Nordic mythology. In verse five of the mythological Norse poem, The Edda, the Scandanavian gods (Æsir) give Freyr the entire realm of the elves (Alfheim) as a gift for his first tooth.
So, there might be some magic in the tooth fairy after all!
