ASSISTING INTENSIVE
MARY TAYLOR AND TY LANDRUM
AUG 31-SEPT 11 | BOULDER

Ashtanga Vinyasa teaches us to listen, deeply, as we move on the rhythm of the breath. We practice in silence to listen. And we teach in silence to listen, so we can meet our students more nearly where they are. In place of words, we often use our hands. We use them to support, adjust and guide our students deeper into the experience of the forms, without breaking the silence and engaging the thinking mind.

At other times, we forgo using our hands, and we break the silence with verbal cues or explanations, for that is sometimes exactly what the situation requires. Hands-on-assists are appropriate only to those who are open to receive them, without fear, intimidation or. And sometimes just holding space, in noble silence, is a better way of giving support. Knowing who to assist, and how and when to assist them, is an intuitive art. This art is informed and guided by the capacity to listen.

Hands-on-assists align with the inherently tactile nature of the Ashtanga Vinyasa practice. They are a vital tool for Mysore teachers, yet they can be precarious. To be skillful, they must be focused, lucid, receptive and precise, and they must draw from a deep experiential sense of alignment. Moreover, they must come from a selfless and loving impulse, without selfish motive or personal ambition, especially on the part of the teacher. If they are lacking in any of these, they become obtrusive, dangerous, manipulative or worse.

In a safe and supportive Mysore room, we discover together that Ashtanga Vinyasa is not a competition, nor an attempt to reshape the body into the images of our projections, but an exploration of the intertwining realities of the imagination and its subtle and visceral embodiments. Only when we take this realization to heart, and we practice accordingly, do we become prepared to assist.

In this two-week intensive, we explore the art of assisting. We consider how and when to use our hands, and when to use other, equally rich teaching methods so that we may support our students in finding their way. In a safe, warm and supportive environment, we discuss the issues of intimacy, privacy and vulnerability that come along with assisting, and we consider the crucial matter of sustaining the same kind of environment as we teach, that is, an environment of mutual trust, which quietly welcomes open and ongoing communication.

On a more technical level, we work through a wide spectrum of adjustments from the Ashtanga system, learning to be supportive and enriching without using significant force. There are no formulas for assisting, but there are patterns of alignment and form that provide insight into understanding the dynamics of assisting. Using these patterns as a guide, we work through the postures one by one, experimenting with them on our fellow teachers, conversing about them, and learning from the experience.

This workshop is designed to help Ashtanga teachers of all kinds hone their ability to assist in a way that is appropriate for the unique bodies and circumstances of their students. There are no requirements of teaching experience or postural proficiency, but participants should be grounded, steeped in daily practice, inspired to serve others, and wide open to learn. All who meet these requirements are welcome to attend.

AUGUST 17-29
BOULDER, CO
The practice of yoga is about connecting to the natural spaciousness of the heart, and allowing its warmth to melt the clutter of the mind. The point is not to escape from ourselves, or to take refuge from the tumult of our lives, but to engage ourselves more openly and honestly than ever before. When we connect to the natural spaciousness of the heart, we connect to something fine and noble, something that nourishes and sustains us from within, and gives us the courage to see ourselves as we are.
An intimate connection with the loving intelligence of the heart allows us to look back upon ourselves with blistering clarity. It allows us to see ourselves without our usual arguments and defenses. It allow us to understand how we isolate ourselves with our narrow ideas, and how our delusions create suffering around us. Still more potently, it allows us to see how we can break our ancient patterns, and love ourselves more truly, by surrendering our self important schemes and aligning with the currents of awakening.
In this immersion, we dive deep into the interconnected practices of asana, pranayama, and meditation, and we rediscover these practices as instruments for probing into the sublime depths of our hearts. At every step, we consider how these practices retune our attention to the immediate unfoldment of our sensory experience, expose us to all of the hidden and unfamiliar parts of ourselves, and urge us to embrace them all.
This intensive will involve full morning practice sessions involving Mysore-style Ashtanga Vinyasa classes and weekly guided explorations, followed by pranayama, seated meditation and chanting. After a midday break, we return to study central yogic ideas, to contemplate yogic mythology, to reflect on our own mental, emotional and somatic states, to workshop our practices, to learn new techniques, and to commune together around our shared aspiration.

INTRO TO ASHTANGA | 8 WEEK ONLINE COURSE

An online course for absolute beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga from home! This course offers lucid instruction on 30 key postures and movement patterns from the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, using traditional sequencing and form. Several variations are shown for each posture to make the practice more accessible and to give room for expansion as the practice evolves.

With a 16 stage practice plan, this course will teach you Ashtanga in an adaptive and methodical fashion. Instead of inundating you with long video streams, and expecting you somehow to follow along, this course gives you careful instructions on each element of the practice, and then asks you turn off the video, and practice in silence what you have learned.

Each day, you begin the practice in silence, and turn on the video only when you need support, or when you are ready to integrate a new posture into your practice. In this way, you learn to practice autonomously, to the cadence of your own breath, so can cultivate the kind of focused attention that is so essential to the internal practice of Ashtanga.

You can move through the practice plan at your pace, making intelligent modifications as needed, and adding new postures only when you have absorbed those that came before. Using this traditional method, (which is not used by any other online course) your practice will build slowly but surely, and with true integrity.

If you want to learn Ashtanga Vinyasa, and circumstances urge you to practice at home, this course is for you. Enroll today and start learning Ashtanga!

Tuition for this 8 week course is $108. This will give you lifetime access to the course on our platform, Yoga Workshop Online. (https://www.yogaworkshoponline.com)

04/25/2019

Ashtanga Vinyasa is one of the most potent practices to emerge from the modern Hatha tradition. Though known for its graceful movements and elegant lines, the purpose is to unravel us from the inside. There is an unusual depth to the practice, an astonishing power to illumine the inner spaces of our minds. And when that power awakens, it draws us to the ecstatic edge of embodied experience, where we taste the unspeakable sweetness of being alive.

In the Summer Intensive, we explore this power where it counts, on the medium of our living, breathing bodies. Using the traditional method of balancing the subtle breath, we invite this power to awaken inside us, and lead us into the profound and exhilarating process of Hatha Yoga—the process by which we open ourselves to the spontaneous unfoldment of deeper creative forces, and make room within ourselves for consciousness to breathe.

To comprehend the deeper meaning of this process, we study the philosophy of embodied liberation that stands behind the Hatha tradition, and we learn how our lineage practices of asana, pranayama and visualization support the process from within. More importantly, we learn how to use these practices more effectively to make gentle but pointed adjustments to our own psychical boundaries that eventuate gradually in an astounding reorganization of our experience. Through these explorations, we rediscover Ashtanga Vinyasa as it was intended to be—an extraordinary ritual of waking up into the sublime wonder of embodied experience.

To the Boulder Ashtanga Community,

As you know, we are losing our beloved practice space at the end of the month. There are many questions about what this means for the Yoga Workshop, and for the future of the practice community in Boulder. As this change happened so abruptly, we have more questions than answers.

Still, we wish to hold an informal meeting to discuss these issues with you, and to answer any questions that we can. Our meeting will be held this Saturday, March 23, at the Yoga Workshop, from 9:15 AM - 10:30 AM. All are welcome.

with love,
Ty and Shayan

The Yoga Workshop is closing its doors. After over 30 years of sweat, tears, laughter and revelation, the Boulder studio is coming to a natural end. The building has been sold to a local developer, and new construction will be underway this spring. Our final day of class will be Sunday, March 31st.

We are saddened by this sudden loss, but hardly surprised, as our building has been stalked by developers for a long time. And we are also amazed to see the brilliant culmination of this remarkable center, as vibrant as ever.

The Yoga Workshop has been a refuge of deep reflection, contemplation and inspiration for so many people in so many different phases of life. We are honored to have nurtured and supported it over these past five years.

We will reopen inanother space—and continue to open other channels for our lineage currents to flow—but the details of where and when are not known. And we do not wish to rush the process. We will allow the present location to close, as it must, then take some time to breathe into the emptiness, and soak in the radiance of possibility, until the next tendril slowly begins to emerge.

-Ty and Shayan

All scheduled auto-payments have been cancelled after Sunday, March 3rd, and all class passes must be used by the end of the month. So come practice with us!

Our Summer and Teacher’s Intensives will be held as scheduled in Boulder, but we will relocate to another suitable space. Details TBA.
