Our Story
Occupational Piano incorporates the theories and interventions of occupational therapy into piano lessons and music skills for all individuals with diverse skills. We serve children with neurobiological disorders as well as syndromes and chromosomal abnormalities. We strive to change the processing in the brain from the brainstem through the cortex using specific techniques that improve the number and type of neurochemicals as well as the efficiency of the neural pathways. We start by addressing the processing at the lower brainstem, then the upper brainstem, then the midbrain, and then the cortex.
Music is used to help children with modulation and self-regulation disorders (processing breakdowns at the lower brainstem and the upper brainstem) attain organization by providing additional information into the lower brainstem. Specific skills involving instruments are used for children with midbrain and cortex disorders to improve functional vision, breath, tactile discrimination, proprioception discrimination, and vestibular descrimination.
Music lessons are most beneficial for children with sensory processing processing disorders that impact processing through the midbrain. This means that the child struggles with skills that impact academics and daily life, but so midly that often he or she does not qualify for special education or additional therapy services. Each piano or voice lesson is individualized and focused around the student's goals, which may relate to both musical and occupational interests.
