Montana Tech's Mineral Museum has been collecting specimens for more than a century and is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What a treat! This man worked in the Butte Mine for 20 years starting at age 18. He worked at the 5,400 foot level and explained to me that he use to run a “Buzzy” just like this one. Officially called a stoper it was used to pound in square pieces of metal to reinforce the tunnels. When we went 85’ feet underground in our elevator he said “heck, we’re barely under the surface”. He would pile into a small cage elevator with 7 other miners and take 2 separate elevators to get the lower levels. Such a fun history lesson!

Missing cat from Free Enterprise Mine area. Popcorn is 4 years old, very nice, soft and snuggly. Orange with white chest and belly. Last seen July 3rd. We’ve been hoping Popcorn would turn up. Please let us know, even if you’ve spotted a dead cat recently.

We had a fun time hosting a kids field trip from a Helena area summer program. They toured the mine, and of course Roxy had to show off her rock and mineral collection!
