We've officially hit the winter solstice, which means the sun is coming back (slowly) and tonight as I was refilling my vitamin organizer with vitamin D, I thought about all the clients we test who have lower levels of this vitamin (or hormone) in the winter.
Many people in Utah are deficient in Vit D. Especially those who wear sunscreen regularly 🙋🏼♀️.
Studies have found the benefit of vit D supplementation in pregnancy to be quite impactful.
Pregnant people tend to have more comfortable pregnancies, easier labors, and happier postpartums
when they have adequate levels of vitamin D in their body. You can safely supplement 5,000iu of vitamin D daily during pregnancy and actually need even more while breastfeeding to accommodate baby's needs. (6,400-10,000iu daily!)
When the sun is out most people think that 15 min a day in the sun is adequate to boost your levels, but research is showing people are still deficient. You can get some vitamin D from animal sources like fatty fish and eggs, and surprisingly mushrooms as a non-animal source, but supplements still tend to pack the biggest punch. So here's your reminder to take your Vitamin D! ☀️
