Influenza has been going around! ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜ท Influenza viruses cause infection of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs) known as the flu. Flu symptoms usually start suddenly & make kids feel more sick or miserable than a typical cold.

To help prevent spreading the flu, wash hands frequently, stay home when ill, and cover your cough or consider wearing a mask.

If your child tests positive for influenza within the first 48 hours of symptoms, they may be a candidate for Tamiflu, or antiviral medication.

Call our office to schedule an appointment if you're concerned your child is having symptoms.

Here's your December dietitian tip! During the holiday season, kids have a lot more access to "special foods" ๐Ÿช๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฅง than they usually do. Sugar intake can feel a bit out of control. Here are a few tips on how to balance out the sweets during snack time.

Remember, the holidays don't last forever, and even kids get tired of eating treats all the time. Don't stress too much and enjoy the holiday season!

Over 125 cases of measles have been reported in Utah this year - with over 70 occuring in children under the age of 18. This has been Utah's largest measles outbreak in 50 years, so it's important to make sure your child is vaccinated and to know the signs.

Measles is highly contagious! It can spread from person to person, through the air with a cough or sneeze (even lingering in a room up to 2 hours) - and a person can spread it before they know they are sick.

Symptoms usually start 7-14 days (up to 3 weeks) after exposure. Kids usually develop cold symptoms that get worse in the first 3 days before developing a rash. Here's what to watch for:

๐Ÿค’ High fever, 104+
๐Ÿ˜ด Fatigue or fussiness
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes
๐Ÿ˜ท White spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots)
๐Ÿ”ด A red, blotchy rash that starts 3-5 days later on the face and spreads to the body.

If your child has symptoms or has been exposed, contact your pediatrician right away. The best protection against measles is the MMR vaccine. It is safe and 97% effective in protecting against measles after 2 doses.

With recent changes to the hepatitis B vaccine recommendations, we understand many parents have questions. As pediatricians, we believe that good decisions start with reliable information, and we're here to help guide you every step of the way.

The hepatitis B vaccine is safe, effective, and continues to be recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics starting at birth. We trust and follow the AAP recommendation, and we're here to help you navigate any questions or concerns.

Croup often shows up at night & that sudden, barking cough can be scary to hear! ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Most of the time, croup is caused by a virus and improves after several days with comfort, cool mist, and fluids.

Sometimes, the virus causes more swelling in the airway, which makes it difficult for your child to breathe, and treatment is needed.

If your child has noisy breathing or trouble catching their breath, call your pediatrician or seek care right away.

Despite its scary name, hand, foot, and mouth (HFM) disease is a common, contagious illness caused by different viruses.

Symptoms usually start like a common cold - with fever, runny nose, and sore throat - but then a rash with red spots or small blisters can appear.

Social media can help teens feel connected and a little less alone. For some kids, that really matters. Of course, there are real concerns that come with screen time, cyberbullying, and comparison culture. And, just like we teach teens to drive safely even though cars can be dangerous, we can also teach teens how to navigate the online world to keep them safe and feel connected.

In our newest blog, behavioral health specialist Rachel Wasser, CSW, at our Willow Creek office, explains more about the importance of connection for teens and safety tips for parents. Link in bio for full blog.
