77 years ago on April 11th 1949 the first motorized fire apparatus for the Bovina Fire Department was delivered to town. Photographer Bob Wyre had his camera handy to capture it. This 1948 GMC FC300 was purchased as a bare cab and chassis truck from R.H. Lewis and Son in Delhi for $2046 in February of 1948. The truck chassis was sent to Fire Apparatus Engineering (FAE) in Clayton NY to be converted into a fire truck.

This truck served Bovina until October of 1987 when it was sold to Ernest Hanselman in South Kortright. The body was removed, the chassis parked and nothing more done with it on the farm. In 2015 BCFD Chief Kevin Brown asked about the truck and was taken to the barn where the chassis was stored. Covered in years of dust and barn cat prints! The body was in the weeds behind another barn. Chief Brown inquired about purchasing it with the intent to restore this piece of history.

In August of 2020 a phone call was received from one of Ernest’s grandsons. “Grandpa is ready to sell it!”. The next morning a deal was struck and arrangements were made to haul the parts back to Bovina.

Over the next year and a half parts were reassembled, taken apart for paint, and missing parts were fabricated. Once it was all back together a trip to NJ for Ed May to work his magic for the pin stripes and gold leaf was arranged.

This week truck 531 will come out of winter storage and be ready for the open house on April 18th along with 3 other historical apparatus that are owned by the Bovina Fire Department. If you want to see these great pieces and hear more about their history please plan to stop by!

This was an awesome coordinated effort on all parts. Neleh and I happened to be traveling into Delhi for brake parts to complete a job on the jeep she drives. We were 3/4 of a mile down the road when the call came in. Neleh Brown, a Jr FF with Bovina and Jr at South Kortright Central School assisted on this call as well by making sure that the family pets were secured to clear the way for other incoming responders.

The first shock to the patient was administered by the AED that Officer Wyatt had in his patrol car. After the first shock was delivered the Delaware County EMS medic flycar (Thomas Miller) arrived on scene and their monitor along with the Lucas CPR compression device was used for 4 more shocks before a normal rhythm was restored.

Bovina EMS is planning on offering a CPR/AED community training this spring for anybody who is interested in learning these very important skills!
