November's feature artist: Michelle Murphy

Artist’s Open Day will be Nov. 1st (1:30pm - 2:45pm) held in our reception building.

Read more about Michelle and her art in her bio below!

Michelle is an artist who works with ceramics and watercolor, exploring themes of our relationship to the natural world. She was born in Skagit County and has spent many years learning the plants and ecology here. She studied at Western’s College of the Environment and went on to work for many years in the field of Restoration Ecology supporting the restoration of natural ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. Some years ago she transitioned from working in the field of Restoration Ecology to counseling. Her care and interest for the earth is also part of this practice and she integrates the practice of ecotherapy into this work. As an artist she explores subjects of ecology and spirituality. Many of her drawings are of native plants found locally. She also explores art as a practice for healing. She is inspired by sharing what she has learned and loves about the natural world with others and enjoys continuing to grow her knowledge of the earth and the incredible world of plants.

Did you know most birds migrate at night? This allows them to fly through calmer skies, avoid predators, and stay cooler on their long journeys. As nights grow longer and the daylight dwindles, what direction do you want your life to begin to travel? Even as cold winds and rains encourage us to hunker down indoors, in the darkness we can let our imaginations travel far and wide. Perhaps, beginning to imagine the inner life and relationship to ourselves that we cultivate in the night can inform the choices and relationships we bring to the world outside. Like the birds, the seasons change the scenery of our lives, and we, too, can find a better home for the winter if we let our dreams carry us to unknown, exciting places. Let Bow Sanctuary be a container for this exploration.

Team Spotlight: Leslie!

ā€œBeing a part of the Bow Sanctuary team as a yoga instructor brings me a lot of joy. Every time I walk into the gardens and breathe the fresh air coming off Blanchard Mountain and the sea, I feel relaxed. It's a gem in the Skagit Valley, bringing together amazing people that I really enjoy being in community with.ā€

We’re so grateful for the warmth, wisdom, and heart Leslie brings to our community.

The practice of pranayama, or breath work, is one of the simplest, most effective ways to affect your energy, whether it's to calm, to energize, to release, or to ground. Of all the techniques, an essential, useful, transformative one is the Yogic Breath.

Three parts for the inhale: first into the abdomen, filling it to its full capacity, then into the ribcage, expanding it completely, then into the clavicle so that the shoulders lift to your ears. Followed by an exhale.

Begin practicing this breath with an inhale of 5 counts, and an exhale of 8. Slowly increase over time as your lung capacity increases.
