When we think of Speech Therapy we often associate it with children but there are so many reasons why adults are in speech therapy! And it’s awesome.

Why you might find speech therapy useful as an adult:

⭐️maybe you need support with building grey area thinking needed for critical thinking in daily problem solving tasks.

⭐️maybe you’re an autistic individual who wants to build social networks in a way that is consistent with your values and preferences! You want support finding your community.

⭐️maybe you need support with identifying personal +professional goals.

⭐️maybe you could use help exploring your expanded sense of self.

⭐️you may need encouragement navigating social scenarios and need a safe person to practice with.

This is a really exciting time to practice self-advocacy and self-actualization and neurodiversity affirming speech therapy can be the place to explore that!

Community building is my jam. Caregiver Coaching sessions are my favorite!

It's an opportunity to go over clips of play, talk about all things language and regulation, and develop personalized plans to support communication together!

Meeting someone where they are means recognizing what attention looks like for them.

Not the attention needed for the therapy tasks, the goals, or session targets.

Maybe it means working for shorter intervals, attending to what the child is interested in, not pushing a neurotypical “standard”, but being connected to the needs of the individual, moment to moment.

Take the therapy detour

Slow the session down

"Does your child say 'you' in a phrase instead of 'I'? For example, 'You want a toy?' instead of 'I want a toy.'

If your child is a Gestalt Language Processor in the early stages of their language development, pronoun mix-ups are common and okay!

Remember, GLPs are using gestalt the way they learned them. They haven't reached the stage of development when they begin to see words as independent, meaningful units that can stand alone.

Talk to your child's SLP, but before that, take a deep breath because this is common and a part of the journey."
