As we age, our body’s ability to conserve water declines, and so does the sense of thirst. This means that many seniors may already be dehydrated before realizing it. Dehydration can worsen memory, increase fall risk, and even mimic dementia symptoms. Fortunately, there are simple ways to help.
✅ Encourage 6–8 cups of water daily—even more in warm weather
✅ Offer hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, soups, and smoothies
✅ Monitor urine color—dark yellow may be a sign of dehydration
✅ Avoid too many caffeine or alcohol-based drinks
✅ Set gentle reminders or use hydration tracking apps
Having a caregiver nearby can make all the difference in keeping hydration on track and avoiding unnecessary hospital visits.
