The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 14,000 people will die from skin cancer this year, and one of the main risk factors for developing skin cancer is sun exposure.

Dr. Shekar, a physician with the Medical Center at Bowling Green, says you can protect yourself from skin damage from the sun.

She suggests applying sun screen with a sun-protection factor, or SPF of 40 or higher and re-apply it every two to three hours if you’re in a swimming pool or sweat a lot. Also, Shekar recommends wearing clothing that covers your arms and a hat that covers your head and gives your face shade.

This National Public Health Week, we’re reminded that public health is all around us, protecting our health and safety, strengthening our communities, and helping families thrive every day. At Safe Kids, we know that our work, from research to education and safety device distribution to policy advocacy in support of systemic change, makes a lasting difference in the lives of children and caregivers everywhere.

This year’s theme, Ready. Set. Action!, is a call to recognize the progress we’ve made and the role we all play in moving it forward. The public health approach that guides our work succeeds when we invest in it, speak up for it, and work together to build safer environments for every child.

And when it works, kids are safer at home, at school, at play, and on the way.

🏬 Med Center Health Moment 🏬

In January 1976, hospital administration expressed concern that the existing facility could no longer adequately support the hospital’s mission as a regional medical center. In response, a Citizens Advisory Committee was formed and, in May, recommended that the Commission abandon the old hospital and construct a replacement facility.

On November 17, 1976, the Certificate of Need and Licensure Board approved a Certificate of Need authorizing Bowling Green–Warren County Hospital to construct a new 298-bed replacement hospital, marking a major step toward developing a modern facility.

In January 1977, the Site Selection and Citizens Advisory Committees recommended securing a 21-acre tract on High Street, known as Parkside East, as the site for the new hospital. The location was chosen for its central position within the city after evaluation of 28 potential sites. Despite delays caused by lawsuits that postponed bond sales, the land was ultimately purchased.

In February, City Commissioner Harold Miller requested joint meetings among the Hospital Board of Directors, the City Commission, and the Fiscal Court to address public questions about the new hospital project. During this period, initial architectural drawings were developed, though the design was later revised to reflect the building as it exists today.
