September is ***dePrevention Month, which includes a specific focus on the elderly due to their elevated risk for su***de. While su***de among young people often receives public attention, older adults, particularly men, have some of the highest su***de rates of any age group.
Warning signs of su***de in older adults can be subtle and may be confused with symptoms of aging or illness.
They can include:
Behavioral changes: Withdrawing from family and social activities.
Mood changes: Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, anger, or irritability lasting more than two weeks.
Giving away possessions: Putting affairs in order or saying goodbye.
Statements about su***de: Expressing thoughts of being a burden, feeling trapped, or wanting to die.
Substance abuse: Increased use of alcohol or drugs.
Changes in habits: Insomnia or sleeping much more or less than usual.
If you or a loved one is struggling with suicidal thoughts or severe depression, it’s essential to seek help immediately. Contact a mental health professional, reach out to a trusted family member or friend, or call the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) for immediate support.
