For Speech-Language-Hearing Month, we want to help debunk a common myth about AAC devices 📲

🚫 Myth: “AAC devices will keep my child from talking.”
✅ Fact: Research shows AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) does NOT inhibit speech or language development — in many cases, it actually encourages verbal communication.

AAC gives children a reliable way to express their wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings while reducing frustration and building confidence. When children have access to successful communication, they are often more engaged socially and more willing to attempt verbal language as well. 💬✨

AAC can support children by helping them:
• Build vocabulary and language skills
• Participate in conversations
• Develop social connections
• Increase independence
• Gain confidence communicating

Every child deserves a voice, whether it’s spoken, typed, pictured, or a combination of all three. 🩵

Taylor is entering her 3rd year as a Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist and is passionate about helping children overcome communication barriers. She especially enjoys working with children who stutter and supporting their confidence in communication.

💬 SLP Fact of the Day:
Stuttering can be common during periods of rapid language development between ages 2-5. However, some signs may indicate the need for a speech-language evaluation, including:

• Sound prolongations (“mmmmommy”)
• Audible blocks or breaks in words (“I wa–ant it”)
• Visible tension or struggle while speaking
• Secondary behaviors like eye blinking or jaw tightening

Children who stutter benefit from supportive, patient, and understanding communication environments.

Does your child drop the ending sounds off words? Do they say things like “/wabbit/” for rabbit or “/tar/” for car?

These are common speech sound patterns in early development, but by certain ages, we expect children to begin producing these sounds more clearly and consistently.

Take a look at our developmental speech sound chart to see the general age ranges when most sounds are expected to emerge. While there is some natural variability, persistent sound errors beyond expected ages may be a sign that additional support is needed.

If you’re concerned about your child’s speech sound development, a speech sound evaluation can help determine whether intervention is recommended and how we can support clearer, more confident communication.
