During Stroke Awareness Month, we’re proud to celebrate Carolyn Stewart, a church pianist, and her inspiring recovery.

After a stroke left her unable to walk, speak or care for herself, Carolyn came to Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital to regain her independence. With the support of her family and care team, the 81-year-old made meaningful gains each day.

A remarkable moment occurred just six days into her stay. As she passed a piano with her therapist, Carolyn paused and asked to play. Her hands found the keys and music flowed effortlessly as if it had never left her.

Today, Carolyn is walking, speaking and continuing her recovery at her son’s home, where a music room gives her space to play, heal and connect with her family and faith.

Recovering from a stroke looks different for everyone.

For severe stroke, healing may begin in a critical illness recovery hospital where patients receive medically focused care and early therapy to manage complex conditions. These patients may need to relearn how to breathe, eat, talk, walk and think clearly again.

As strength and stability return, patients may continue their journey at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, where personalized therapy helps rebuild independence, confidence and the ability to safely return home.

Our continuum of care includes respiratory, physical, occupational and speech therapy. Respiratory therapists focus on breathing. Physical therapy works on rebuilding strength, balance and mobility. Occupational therapy helps patients return to their everyday activities such as bathing, dressing and managing tasks at home. Speech therapy addresses communication challenges, memory or thinking deficits and swallowing difficulties that are common after a stroke.

Through coordinated, patient-centered care, our nationwide network of critical illness recovery and inpatient rehabilitation hospitals support stroke survivors every step of the way, helping them move forward, regain confidence and prepare for life beyond a hospital.

"What is the best treatment for a stroke?”

At our hospitals, stroke rehabilitation begins as soon as patients are medically stable. Starting therapy early leverages a critical recovery window, when the brain is most responsive and gains in cognition, mobility and independence are greatest.

Within our continuum of care, patients with the most complex recoveries often begin their recovery journey at a critical illness recovery hospital, relearning to breathe, eat, talk, walk and think clearly again. As they improve, they may transition to inpatient rehabilitation for specialized therapy aimed at rebuilding strength, skills and confidence for life after stroke. Both levels of care include physician-led, multidisciplinary teams and personalized treatment plans.

Recognizing the signs of a stroke can change everything.

Peggy Downey, 56, learned that lesson firsthand. Living with COPD, she was used to pacing her activity — but one weekend, something was different. Her family knew something was wrong. Her shortness of breath, dropping of objects and dragging her right foot were subtle but serious signs of a stroke. They called emergency services to rush her to the hospital.

A blood clot in Peggy’s brain caused a stroke. Her recovery journey took her from a medically induced coma to Select Specialty Hospital - McKeesport and then to Select Medical Rehabilitation - Pensacola. The clinical experts and rehabilitation therapists helped her rebuild strength, mobility and confidence.

This Stroke Awareness Month, Peggy’s story is a powerful reminder: Recognizing stroke symptoms and accessing the right level of rehabilitative care can make a meaningful difference. Every recovery takes its own path — but with specialized care, progress and independence are possible.

Cecelia Hutchinson was living an independent life when she experienced complications from colitis — an inflammation of the digestive tract — as well as a fall that required a total shoulder replacement. After the procedure at TriStar Greenview, Cecelia transferred to Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital ready to regain her strength and independence.

Cecelia was our first patient admitted through the new joint venture partnership between Select Medical and Vibra Healthcare, making her recovery especially meaningful for the team.

Upon admission, Cecelia required assistance with bed mobility, walking and completing daily activities. Through a coordinated, physician-led care plan that included physical and occupational therapy, she made steady progress, focusing on safe movement, strength and regaining everyday skills.

By discharge, Cecelia was able to walk 70 feet with a walker and minimal assistance. Additionally, her endurance, balance and confidence had improved.

Cecelia’s journey reflects our continued commitment to helping medically complex patients regain function and independence.
