Colorectal cancer is on the rise among younger adults.

According to the American Cancer Society, rates have increased by 2.9% per year from 2013 to 2022 among people under 50.

While there’s no single cause, there are steps you can take that may help lower your risk:

✅ Get screened if you are 45 or older

🏃‍♀️ Stay physically active

🥗 Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and limit red or processed meats

🚭 Quit smoking (or never start)

⚖️ Maintain a healthy weight

Some risk factors, such as genetics, are beyond our control, but making healthy lifestyle choices can go a long way toward prevention and early detection.

Heart attacks can strike suddenly and intensely, or start off slowly with mild discomfort. Knowing the symptoms and acting fast can save a life.

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟵𝟭𝟭 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲:

👉 Chest discomfort, such as pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain that lasts more than a few minutes or comes and goes.

👉 Pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach.

👉 Shortness of breath (with or without chest pain).

👉 Cold sweat, nausea, rapid or irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness or unusual fatigue.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: Symptoms can look different for men and women.

Women may experience any of the above symptoms or anxiety, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, pain in the shoulders, back or arm and unusual tiredness or weakness.

Don’t wait — call 911 right away if something doesn’t feel right.

This February, our Wellness Services department kicked off an Olympic-inspired Wellness Challenge for employees in celebration of the Winter games!

Participants have been taking on a variety of health and wellness activities to earn points. Those with the most points will be awarded Gold, Sliver or Bronze medals for their dedication this month.

Each week, the Wellness team also hosted fun, Olympic-themed events, such as a rubberband biathlon, desktop curling, Pictionary and speed stapling, bringing friendly competition to Wood County Hospital.

The winners will be announced in the first week of March. Stay tuned to see who takes home the gold! 🥇🏆

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women (not including skin cancer), and each year, it causes more deaths than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

While not all lung cancers can be prevented, you can lower your risk with a few healthy steps:

🚭 Quit (or never start) smoking and avoid secondhand smoke

🏠 Test your home for radon exposure and get it treated if needed.

🥦 Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

The American Cancer Society recommends yearly low-dose CT (LDCT) scans for people aged 50-80 who smoke or used to smoke, and have at least a 20-pack-year history of smoking.

DYK? Ear, nose and throat concerns are some of the most common reasons children visit the doctor. Helping your child learn healthy habits early can make a big difference.

Here are 3 simple tips to get started:

✔️ Practice gentle ear care by avoiding cotton swabs in the ear canal and cleaning only the outer ear with a damp cloth.

✔️ Encourage gentle nose blowing and consider saline spray during colds or allergies to keep passages clear.

✔️ Protect little ears from loud noise with earmuffs or earplugs at concerts, games or other noisy environments.
