Oral ties and torticollis?…. Hard pass!! 🛑➡️
What are oral ties and torticollis, and how are they related?! Well let me tell you!!…. 💭🤔
Oral ties are extra tissue in a babies mouth, which unfortunately leads to a painful latch and difficulty feeding. 👩🍼🍼
Torticollis (often called “wry neck”) is a condition where the neck muscles tighten or shorten, causing the head to tilt to one side while the chin points the other way.🫤
What causes these things?? 🫣
Torticollis in babies is usually due to tightness in a muscle called the sternocleidomastoid (the big neck muscle). It can happen from positioning in the womb or after birth. 👶🏼
Oral ties on the other hand, are genetic. your baby is simply going to have them or not. 🤷🏼♀️
But how are the two related? 🙋🏼♀️
A baby with an oral tie may struggle to latch well. To compensate, they might hold their head or jaw in a certain position repeatedly → this can contribute to tightness in the neck, which is torticollis. 👩🍼
