Yes to all of these (and more)!!! They are absolutely life saving skills for a midwife to have. All things that we train for and practice regularly so that we know what to do when they happen IRL, because they will absolutely happen. I've had to use all of these skills this year and I'm thankful for a well trained team who knows what to do and how to work together in these situations.

When interviewing your homebirth midwife, make sure she has these skills and that she talks in depth about them.

I love getting birth announcements, family pictures, and Christmas cards from my past (and current) clients. If you would like to send me a family Christmas card🎄, I'd love to add it to my wall of footprints and cards (or if you'd prefer it not be up on my wall, just send it with a note letting me know). You should have my office address, but if you need me to send it to you, shoot me a pm or text.

The majority of our clients labor in water and/or birth in water. Reach out if you have questions about water birth at home.

"Conclusion
When compared with land birth, water birth does not appear to increase the risk of most maternal and neonatal complications. Like any other delivery method, water birth has its unique considerations and potential risks, which health care providers and expectant parents should evaluate thoroughly. However, with proper precautions in place, water birth can be a reasonable choice for mothers and newborns, in facilities equipped to conduct water births safely."

"In this systematic review contrasting water births with traditional land births, we observed notable safety benefits of water births. Maternal infection risk did not increase with water births. In addition, water births resulted in a 20% reduction in the risk of postpartum hemorrhage, a 40% decline in instances of neonatal aspiration, a 36% decrease in the risk of neonatal infections, a 31% reduction in the frequency of low Apgar scores, and a 44% drop in admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit. However, it is pertinent to mention that water births presented a slightly increased likelihood of umbilical cord avulsion."

🌟2025 Off-call post🌟
I usually take an extended period of time off-call during the summer months to travel and spend time with my family without constantly saying, "if I'm not at a birth" every time that they ask if I'll be at an activity.
Another thing that being off-call allows me (and my students) to do is participate in CEU/continuing education classes to sharpen our skills and keep up on the latest research.
In May we were able to sponsor a Breech Without Borders training in Bowling Green. Dr. David Hayes spent two days here, teaching breech skills to midwives (and one lovely doctor) who traveled from all over Kentucky, Tennessee, and surrounding states. This was our second time taking this training and it was incredible. I'm excited to see what CEU classes we'll be able to attend in the next year.
All of that said, in 2025 I will not be taking due dates from about mid-May to mid-July.
