World Council of Enterostomal Therapists

World Council of Enterostomal Therapists A world of expert professional nursing care for people with ostomy, wound or continence needs. Norma N Gill from the USA was the first WCET President.

The WCET was formally founded on May 18, 1978 when 30 Enterostomal Therapists, representing 15 countries and 20 industry representatives attended the first two-day congress held in Milan, Italy. This meeting was undertaken in conjunction with the International Ostomy Association (IOA). This first forum of Enterostomal Therapists represented a group of people from around the globe, some of whom wer

e not nurses. They shared a passion for their field of work, dedication to the needs of people undergoing stoma surgery and a driving motivation to ensure continual improvement in a relatively new field of nursing. Because of the dedication of the initial WCET members, global communication lines were established among Enterostomal Therapists locally, nationally and internationally. This desire for constant advancement continues today and is driving Enterostomal Therapy Nursing into the future. The WCET celebrated 30 years of advancement in Enterostomal Therapy Nursing in 2008 and is proud of the standards now offered in international Enterostomal Therapy Nursing care. The WCET is committed to serving the needs of patients and health professionals and is focused on providing a global forum for international debate, discussion and ideas. The WCET actively encourages members to contribute to the WCET Journal, share Enterostomal Therapy Best Practice news and techniques and participate in the WCET Congress.

Join us for this important presentation, 'Indigenous Cultural Safety and Health Equity in Indigenous Communities' at the WCET®–NSWOCC® 2026 Joint Congress.

Presented by Michelle Buffalo, Bev Smith, and Jeremy Caul on Monday, April 27th, this session will explore systemic racism in healthcare, reflect on the legacy of Joyce Echaquan and Joyce’s Principle, and examine our shared responsibility to advance Truth and Reconciliation.

Building on the work of the NSWOCC Indigenous Wound, Ostomy and Continence Health Core Program, speakers will highlight the importance of culturally safe, trauma-informed, and co-designed systems of care.

Attendees will gain deeper awareness of personal bias and meaningful insights to support more equitable, respectful healthcare practices.
