Things most people donโt expect when they start therapy
These arenโt usually said in the first session.

1. Therapy doesnโt โfixโ you in a few sessions. There isnโt a timeline you can Google.
2. A childhood can leave an impact even if it wasnโt abusive or โthat bad.โ
3. Certain coping habits (like relying on alcohol every night) can block progress until theyโre addressed.
4. Therapy isnโt just a place to vent and leave. Thatโs support. Therapy is about changing patterns.
5. You wonโt be validated all the time. Growth sometimes means being challenged.
6. Youโre not broken. Youโre repeating strategies that no longer work.
7. If youโre not ready to change, thatโs okay. But progress requires honesty about readiness.
8. The conflict you keep describing may not be about the other person. Often, itโs about your response.
9. Healing is uncomfortable. If every session feels easy, deeper work may not be happening.
10. You may feel frustrated with the process at times. Thatโs often part of meaningful change.
What we notice in practice is this:
People want relief without disruption.
Insight without effort.
Change without discomfort.
Therapy doesnโt work that way.
Itโs not magic. Itโs structured, supported work.

Theyโre the ones willing to reflect, participate, and apply what they learn beyond the session.
