✨ Back with another Know Your Rights post!

This series is all about empowering families by breaking down the rights you hold under IDEA—because knowing your rights changes everything.

Today’s focus: Parental Participation.

Under federal law, parents are not bystanders—they are equal members of the IEP team. That means you must be included in decisions about your child’s identification, evaluation, placement, and services. Your input is not optional—it’s essential.

📚 This is what our Know Your Rights series is all about: giving you clear, actionable knowledge to feel confident and supported in your child’s educational journey.

💬 Did you know you can even bring an advocate, therapist, or support person to your child’s IEP meeting?

✨ Welcome to Fact or Fiction: Special Ed-ition ✨ (yes, I couldn’t resist the rhyme 😉).

There are so many myths and half-truths floating around when it comes to IDEA, IEPs, and Procedural Safeguards. This series is here to set the record straight—with facts that empower parents and clear up the confusion.

Today we’re busting the myth that “if a parent doesn’t agree with the IEP, they have no options.”

The fact? ✅ Parents have multiple safeguards, including mediation, due process, Prior Written Notice—and in some states, even a 10-day recess option.

Think of it as your chance to fact-check the system and walk into IEP meetings with more confidence. 💙

💬 What’s a myth you’ve heard about IEPs or special education? Drop it in the comments—you might see it in a future post!

✨ Welcome to a brand-new series—and my favorite 😏😉: Ask Phillip Anything (APA).

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like when you pick up the phone and call Measuring Minds—this one’s for you.

Now, Phillip’s not your typical “front desk” guy. He’s a true country boy at heart—grew up in a small town in Texas, graduated with a class of 12 (well… technically he dropped out 😅 but later earned his GED and Bachelor’s) . Life taught him a lot more than any classroom did, and it’s that mix of honesty, grit, and genuine care that he brings to every single conversation with families.

And fair warning—when you call, he just might answer in what more than a few people have described as his Matthew McConaughey voice. 😉

When you call, Phillip answers. He’ll listen, ask questions, and make sure you feel supported—because he knows what it’s like to feel unsure of the next step.

💬 Got a question for Phillip? Drop it in the comments—you might just see it in a future APA post.

✨ Did you know? Some private schools require a psycho-educational evaluation when a child is being considered for grade advancement.

If your child is performing well above grade level, schools may request formal testing that looks at:
🧠 Intellectual skills
📚 Academic achievement
💙 Social, emotional, and behavioral readiness

This type of evaluation provides a full picture of whether a student is ready to skip ahead—academically and socially. At Measuring Minds, we offer these evaluations with the same care, professionalism, and expertise as all of our assessments.

👉 If your private school has asked for this type of evaluation—or if you’re considering grade advancement for your child—send us a message or visit measuringminds.org to learn more.

📚 Back to the Basics
This week in our IEP & Me series, we’re breaking down one of the most important acronyms in special education: IEP.

An IEP—Individualized Education Program—is a written plan that outlines your child’s learning needs, the goals they’re working toward, and the services and supports the school must provide. It’s not just paperwork; it’s a roadmap for your child’s education, created with you as an equal member of the team.

Follow along as we keep unpacking the building blocks of special education, one acronym at a time. 💙

✨ Back to School is always a big transition—for kids and parents. Add in an IEP, and there are even more moving pieces to prepare for (and worry about).

Here are a few mindful tips that can make those first weeks smoother:
✅ Connect with your child’s support staff early.
✅ Make sure teachers have the IEP in hand.
✅ Clarify how you’ll stay in touch.

These small steps help build strong relationships, reduce stress, and ensure your child starts the year on the right foot. 💙

💬 What’s one back-to-school tip that’s helped your family? Share it in the comments—we’d love to hear.

📚 Introducing Shelf-Care with Sally 📚

I’m an avid reader — usually juggling two or three books at once between my nightstand, Audible, and a book club pick — which is why I’m excited to share that side of me here with you.

This new series, Shelf-Care with Sally, is where I’ll bring reflections from books that shape how I think about children, education, and the systems we navigate together as parents.

I’m starting with Nobody’s Normal by Roy Richard Grinker . As a deeply introspective and analytical person, this book resonated with me as I enter my 17th year in education: As a society, we’ve defined children’s unique ways of growing and learning as ‘delays,’ ‘disabilities,’ and DSM checklists. But who gets to decide what is ‘normal’? Our children are not categories — they are individuals whose value can’t be reduced to checklists.

Grinker explores how other cultures define (or sometimes don’t define) exceptionalities, and it forced me to acknowledge two truths I carry daily in this work:

1️⃣ Children are whole people beyond labels.
2️⃣ Our systems only provide services and supports when those labels exist.

That’s the tension I live in as a psychologist and as a parent — always aware of the boxes, while never letting them define the child.

💬 I’d love to hear: do you feel labels have helped or limited your child in the school system? Drop your thoughts below.

✨ The Summer I… finally got serious about our social media posts. 😉

It may look like I’m always working (ok, maybe true 😅), but I also wanted to share a bit of my own humor and lightness here too. Because while the work is serious, the way we connect doesn’t always have to be. 💙

Now it’s your turn—how would you finish the sentence “The Summer I…”? Drop yours in the comments, we’d love to hear! ⬇️

✨ Introducing our new series: IEP & Me: Vocabulary (I love a good rhyme!😅😆)

In the world of education, we sometimes joke about “acronym soup”—because it feels like every meeting is filled with letters and jargon that parents are expected to decode. That’s why this series is here: to break those terms down—one at a time—in a clear, approachable way for families.

📚 And continuing with our September theme, we’re starting with the cornerstone law that shapes everything we do: IDEA. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, first passed in 1975 and reauthorized in 2004, guarantees access to public education, ensures services are individualized, and gives parents a meaningful voice in decisions about their child’s education.

All month long, we’ll keep unpacking these acronyms and showing you what they really mean for your child’s rights in school.

Follow along as we make acronym soup a whole lot easier to digest. 💙
