Obesity ‘begets’ Obesity

Weight gain occurring over time is one of the reasons that the disease of obesity is considered ‘progressive’.

Weight gain causes various internal changes in the body including hormonal, metabolic and molecular changes that increase the risk for greater fat accumulation. These obesity-associated biological changes reduce the body’s ability to oxidize or burn fat, increase the conversion of glucose (carbohydrate) to fat, and increase fat storage in various locations. In addition, the state of obesity affects certain regulators of appetite and hunger which can lead to big hunger, increasing the size and frequency of meals and snacks.
