Many people believe they’ve always loved themselves, yet they begin to notice patterns of accepting or tolerating things that are harmful. What I often tell clients is that self-love isn’t always absent—it’s sometimes incomplete or misdirected. We can genuinely care about ourselves while still engaging in behaviors or relationships that don’t reflect our worth.
So sometimes it isn’t a lack of self-love, but rather an inaccurate or underdeveloped form of self-love—one that hasn’t yet learned how to set boundaries, protect our emotional needs, or recognize when something isn’t healthy. As we grow, our self-love becomes more aligned with honoring ourselves, not just caring about ourselves in theory.
