I've been reading about people that are making masks and accessories to distribute to the medical community. Here are plans for making face shields from readily available materials.

Based on the plans, you cut the plastic into long 10-inch strips. So a 30-inch roll will get you three strips to work with. That’s what I’ve worked with to date, 30”x72”. That will make you 15 shields if you’re efficient with the cutting.

Since the outbreak, I have been trying to figure out how I can best serve my community. My first thought was to find a reliable source for FDA approved masks at a fair price. This has become nearly impossible. Everyone in the medical community is trying to do the same thing.

American companies like 3M have said they will have a billion masks by the end of the year. This is great news but it won’t help in the short term. As the Chinese companies return to work and their communities return to normal, more are reaching out to offer masks. I have a long experience with some vendors and this may be an option but it could also be very risky. The quality of the products are unknown and many are willing to sell counterfeit product to make a buck.

I think I may have found a solution. I researched how N95 mask could be reused safely. The problem with the masks is that they can’t be cleaned by solution because of the structure of the mask material. Washing them will sanitize them for reuse but the process will break down the internal structure of the layers and reduce the effectiveness of the mask by 25-30% making an N95 mask essentially a N65 mask. Still better than nothing but not ideal. Further research led me to finding a study done Nebraska Medicine recently. It describes in detail how to set up a room to bathe the masks in UV and sterilize them and also retain the masks’ structure since the light does not degrade the material. I believe this has merit but I’m an engineer and not a doctor. I have reached out to many suggesting this solution, in government, the medical community, etc but have not had any responses. My hope is if people get the word out this could be made known as an option that is worth serious consideration. I think the most important message is “DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR N95 MASKS”. The material is the gold. If it can safely be sterilized, it could fill the gap between available stock and when companies like 3M come on-line and make new stock available and keep the heroes in the medical community doing their jobs saving our lives.
