🚩Behavioral Red Flags🚩
Horses are funny creatures and sometimes do silly things, but acting goofy can be a a behavioral red flag. Sometimes these behaviors can be signs of discomfort, pain, not enough movement, or even stress.

🚩 Head shaking, weaving, or cribbing:
All of these behaviors are a coping mechanism when a need is missing in an equine’s life, such as proper natural movement (if they are stalled) or exercise. It can also be caused by poor riding, such as excessive pulling on the reins or improper saddle fit. These missing needs and improper riding can also cause muscle soreness and atrophy over time.

🚩 Yawning in Excess:
Nope, not because your horse is tired, it’s a way of releasing build up stress from many factors…excessive pulling on the mouth, lack of dental care/improper dental care or stressful situations, just to name a few.

I believe that many issues that occur in horses today could be solved by addressing these 3 things.

“Good enough” should never be a phrase in the horse world. When it comes to tack and soundness, I hear this phrase all too often. We wouldn’t wear a shoe that is “good enough” even though it pinched our foot. This is the same with our horses. Improper saddle fits are the most common issue I see when working on horses. Many problems arise when horses have a poor saddle fit and it goes on to affect the rest of the body. Invest in your horse and they will physically last longer.

“Naughty” or “silly” don’t always mean your horse is being naughty or silly. Most often these behaviors are signs of something more… pain related issues. Yes, some horses do have personalities that reflect those two, but most often the root of that behavior is pain or discomfort. Don’t write off your horse’s behavior.

Building your riding goals is great and everyone should goals to reach. Starting from the ground doing groundwork helps set your horse up for success! Groundwork helps horses stretch and warm up before riding which prevents injuries. It also gives you a change to see how your horse is moving. If you see something wrong it’s easier to catch while observing rather than feeling in the saddle. Take time to do groundwork.

You may think you are letting your horse be a horse, but are you really? Horses were designed to graze and roam. Locked up in a paddock, run, or small field is not the same.

Horses should have access to 24/7 feed to ensure their gut stays functioning as it should. A horse’s gut can become damaged just after 3 hours if they don’t have feed in their body constantly. This means feeding twice daily can be damaging their gut. They learn to self regulate on feed as they do in the wild.

When horses live in small areas, they don’t move like they should. Their muscles become tight and underdeveloped. Tension can cause pain and irregular behavior, which can lead to poor performance.

Nowadays, horses have gut, stress and other issues. Horses need to be with a herd, access to forage, and room to roam. If your horse is in a situation where they don’t have access to live in a big area, be sure to go let them out into a big arena or pasture to run. Don’t ride them, just let them be a horse for awhile. You will watch your horse’s health mentally and physically improve!

Chiropractic or Massage?
Both! Think of it this way...your horse’s skeleton is like a vehicle frame and their muscles are like the engine that moves the frame. If you have a vehicle with a poor engine, your car will not perform well and may have breakdowns. Horses are the same!

While chiropractic is amazing, you also need good, functioning muscles. Chiropractors and massage therapist go hand in hand. The chiropractor helps correct structural problems and massage therapist help correct tension that can cause structural issues.

When getting your horse adjusted, get your horse massage before or after their chiropractic session. This also is a good idea for humans too!
