Stillwater Hospice Stillwater Hospice honors and respects the sacred process that is end-of-life care. Learn more about the Stillwater Hospice difference.

As an ACHC accredited hospice we are redefining hospice care by providing a combination of professional medical care and an outstanding support network designed to meet the needs of our patients and their families. We take the time to educate you on what hospice is, how it benefits those we work with, and how we help make every moment count. At its most basic, hospice care encompasses the services

needed to maintain the comfort and dignity of a person whose life is limited. At Stillwater Hospice, however, we believe hospice care is far more than that. It is the opportunity to compassionately honor life, instill hope and allow our patients to make the most of the days, weeks and months they may have left to live. Stillwater Hospice services can be provided to terminally ill people wherever they live. This means a patient living in a nursing facility or long-term care facility can receive specialized visits from our nurses, home health aides, chaplains, social workers, and volunteers, in addition to other care and services provided by the nursing facility. Stillwater Hospice professionals and the nursing home have a written agreement in place in order for the hospice to serve residents of the facility. Hospice care serves those who have any terminal, or life-ending, condition. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider hospice once “curative” treatments—those designed to restore good health—will no longer be used. Once entering hospice, each patient receives an individualized treatment plan reflecting their personal goals, medical needs, and the level of support required. In our experience, hospice care can positively impact a patient’s spouse, partner, and family as much as it does the patient. We can help reduce stress and worry by providing knowledge, structure, and support.

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight shines on Selene Dunn.

Selene has been volunteering with us since November of 2024. She has taken on every volunteer role I’ve asked her to perform. She has been a check-in person at the Tree of Remembrance, helped prep and deliver 450 roses on Valentine’s Day to all the assisted living patients, run errands for patients, and sat with patients to give caregivers a much-needed break.

She has also sat with patients who had no family, offering a loving, caring presence as they took their last breath. Selene has a great sense of humor and a calming presence.

Selene is a one-of-a-kind wonder. She’s a contractor, currently renovating two houses to sell. She not only improves the lives of Butte residents through her volunteering but also improves the city itself—breathing new life into historic homes and building new ones.

In her spare time (yeah, right), you’ll find her in her greenhouse or garden. Even with all that, Selene finds both time and joy in volunteering.

She and her late husband had a ranch in the Divide area, which she sold after his passing. But Selene was drawn back—because it still felt like home.

Selene says about volunteering:

“I was blessed to have been born with a caretaker’s heart. Volunteering my time so that the full-time caretakers can have time off—for me—is not a completely altruistic endeavor though. To be honest, it makes me feel good about myself, which of course is really pretty selfish and self-centered...”

Selene is a precious blessing.

This month’s story comes from our Helena, Montana agency; Meet Zoe Chamberlin, Community Relations Representative.

“My start into healthcare began right out of high school. I got my CNA license right after graduation and started working for a very large assisted living facility and taking care of my grandpa. I got to know what healthcare was like right before the pandemic hit and during the peak of the pandemic.

Working in assisted living opened my eyes to hospice and what exactly it was. I didn't really understand hospice until I started working in assisted living and had many residents who received hospice care. I, along with many others, thought hospice is only meant to be used in the last few days/moments of someone being with us. I learned very quickly through the hospice team and our nurses that that isn't always the case. I had many amazing hospice nurses who I really valued and looked up to and learned lots from.

Taking care of my grandpa was a very difficult thing for me. His hospice nurse truly helped make a lot of things easier. It was hard for me to come to terms with him being on hospice. His hospice team was there for me and helped all of us understand the hospice benefit and process. I just wanted to be by his side and for him to be comfortable, and his hospice team did just that. There wasn't one time where I saw him in pain. If we had questions or needed them to come out, they were there in a heartbeat. They made things easy, and it kind of all clicked with me then that I wanted to be able to help families during these difficult times in some way. Hospice is such a scary topic for some, and I wanted to be able to help families with the difficult topic and help ease their minds. I wanted to be able to make a positive impact on families and ease them the way I was eased during a difficult time.

I knew that when the opportunity arose for me to be a part of a hospice team—and a good one—I had to take it. When I joined Stillwater, I knew I was going to be able to bring comfort and education to families going through the process of a loved one being on hospice, or even helping the patient themselves understand what hospice is. The fulfillment it brings me knowing that I get to help families during a difficult time and help ease their nerves makes me feel good and is the reason why I am a part of an amazing hospice team.”

We love your story, thank you for sharing it, and for being a part of the Stillwater Hospice family! 🧡

You may have heard that the time for which someone can receive hospice care is very short; however, it is actually longer than most people believe. Under Medicare and Medicaid, for example, the first two periods of care last for 90 days each, followed by an unlimited number of 60-day periods. As such, patient may receive the benefits associated with hospice care—such as reduced stress and greater physical comfort—for 6 months or more. This gives them a greater opportunity to enjoy the last months of life, while easing the burden on those they care about.

WE OFFER THERAPY SERVICES WHILE IN HOSPICE CARE
Some of the individuals who receive hospice care from Stillwater Hospice require help developing new skills to perform everyday tasks. Often, this is the result of a medical condition; for example, those who have undergone a stroke may have difficulty holding a fork or other utensils. Occupational, speech-language or physical therapy may be prescribed by the medical team when it is medically necessary. The goal is to help patients complete basic tasks and maintain function.
Additional therapies may be provided to patients and caregivers by qualified volunteers on a case-by-case basis.
