This nutrition course is for an individual who wants to learn what to eat, how to choose healthy foods, and how much to eat to loose, maintain, or gain weight. This course will discuss what a balanced meal consists of, the different macro- and micro-nutrients needed for the body, what and how much to eat prior to and after exercise, and much more! Individuals will be provided a personalized nutrition packet that includes their recommended caloric and macronutrient intake as well as a place for them to take notes throughout the course. This course will help prepare individuals for the new year by creating a plan of action to implement and sustain healthy habits into their lifestyle.

The course starts on Tuesday, December 3rd, from 6-7 p.m. CST and will occur weekly for the following seven weeks. The course time during the week of Christmas will be determined during the first session on December 3rd.

There are many variables that factor into your overall resistance program. Of them, the main variable is the volume-load for each exercise and for the entire workout, Volume-load is the value of the load (weight) lifted multiplied by the total sets and reps performed (Volume-load = load X sets X reps). By changing any of these variables, you are able to focus more on strength, power, hypertrophy, or muscular endurance.

This table lists the target load, sets, reps, and rest intervals for each overall goal. By using this table to structure your resistance program, you will be able to make your training focus be any one of these overall outcomes.

The best medicine for your health is right at your fingertips. Exercise and healthy eating habits help your longevity in many, many ways, as well as helps prevent the onset of many chronic diseases.

If you are just starting out on your health journey, there is no need to feel overwhelmed and go from one extreme to the other (ex. being sedentary to being in the gym 6 days/week for 2 hours each session). Instead, take small steps. Even starting out by going on ~30 min. walks for at least 5 days/week has led to health improvements (Liguori et al., 2022). Listen to your body, know when you need more rest, and be patient. Once you are able to do that, challenge yourself by making your exercise sessions harder (ex. longer walk/distance, more weight/reps).

The meals before and immediately after your workout sessions are extremely important for a variety of reasons, with the overarching emphasis being to provide enough energy for the workout AND to enhance the repair and remodeling processes following the workout. Without enough nutrients for the body, your exercise performance may decrease and the repair and remodeling processes will take longer.
