As I Come across situations with clients, I wonder “Am I the only one that knows this?”
Client walks in and shares “I took a muscle relaxer before the session”
Taking muscle relaxers before a massage is discouraged as it can hide pain signals, leading to potential over-working of tissues and injury. These medications cause sedation and reduce your ability to provide necessary feedback on pressure, making the massage less effective.
Key Reasons to Avoid Muscle Relaxers Before Massage
Reduced Feedback: Muscle relaxers can prevent you from feeling if the pressure is too deep, risking injury.
Altered Tissue Feel: Medications can make muscles feel abnormally soft or "fluffy," making it harder for the therapist to identify and treat specific tension areas.
Masking Pain: They mask pain that may return intensified once the medication wears off.
Side Effects: Potential for dizziness, drowsiness, or decreased blood pressure, which can be heightened by the increased circulation from a massage.
