When my daughter fell at school and came home asking me to adjust her wrist, I knew I needed to slow down and assess before doing anything.
As chiropractors, especially when working with kids, our job isn’t to adjust first and ask questions later. It’s to look at the whole picture.
How did they fall?
What direction was the force?
What movements hurt?
Is there swelling?
How are they using the arm?
Does palpation increase pain?
Does vibration increase pain?
She didn’t have an obvious deformity, but something about the way she described the fall — combined with her tenderness and pain response — made me uncomfortable adjusting the wrist itself.
So instead, we supported the areas around the injury, helped her nervous system regulate, used ice, compression, rest, arnica, and monitored things closely.
The next morning, after more swelling and increased discomfort, we took her in for imaging and she was diagnosed with a buckle fracture.
And honestly? This is exactly why proper assessment matters.
Not every injury needs an adjustment.
Not every injury needs an ER visit.
But kids deserve providers who know how to tell the difference ❤️
If your child takes a hard fall and you’re sitting there wondering:
“Is this serious?”
“Should I wait?”
“Do they need imaging?”
“Can this just be monitored?”
Bring them in.
We are more than happy to be your first stop after those unsure injuries. If an adjustment is appropriate, we’ll help. If imaging or another referral is needed, we’ll guide you there too. Our goal is always making sure your child gets the care they actually need to heal well and recover fully.
Sometimes peace of mind is just as important as treatment 🤍
