Superbowl Halftime Show reaction:
The "appropriateness" of the Super Bowl halftime show is ALWAYS a thing. And you are entitled to your own opinion, most definitely. What I ask of you is to examine if your thoughts, feelings, opinions have a misogynistic flavor to them. Certainly, bodies were on display in this performance and sexuality was a big part of it. We need to develop language around how to feel about these kinds of experiences BEYOND black and white statements such as "it was AMAZING! Girl power!" or "That sucked." I myself feel conflicted because yes, I think it's pretty incredible that two women over the age of 40 were up doing such a sexy show-an age that is usually attributed to diminished sexuality for women and they are both mothers which takes the sexuality rating even lower most of the time. Both women are Latina and really really showcased that aspect of their popularity which I thought was AWESOME! So much Spanish was spoken during America's main sporting event! So cool! But I feel conflicted about the sexiness of the show and the bodies on display. How much pressure did they feel to make the show so sexy? Do male performers get that same pressure? I just wonder about how that decision gets made for female performers. I also struggle to celebrate the bodies on display, mainly JLo, because commenting on "how good she looks for 50" sets an incredibly high standard for young girls (like you should be able to look like JLo at age 50 if you just try hard enough). I've heard JLo speak about her fairly intense, although not out of the ordinary dieting techniques to maintain the image of her body and that just makes me sad. It makes me hesitate to celebrate her body in this context. Which makes me think, maybe I can just celebrate the performance, the dancing, the showwomanship of both of these ladies and leave their bodies out of it. I've always felt uncomfortable with how much Lizzo's body is discussed and wonder how she feels about this. Might she want others to discuss her musicianship rather than her size? These two ladies might feel the same way.

Do you have a kiddo who struggles with picky eating? This is a great podcast to listen to! The guest, Katja Rowell is a feeding specialist who has co-authored some AMAZING books to help parents, teens and adults who have picky eating in their lives in one way or another. Her approach is something I think we all could learn from when it comes to eating together, whether it be with kids or other adults. She approaches feeding issues from a responsive stance, not force feeding or obsessing over ounces, calories, bites, amounts. This helps reduce anxiety in the child (anxiety being a HUGE appetite and hunger suppressant) and allows them to feel safe while eating which encourages them to be more adventurous with trying unfamiliar foods. Give it a listen!

In this very special episode, I interview a family practice physician who is an expert at feeding children who have extreme food selectivity. I really loved her book, Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating: A Step-by-Step Guide for Overcoming Selective Eating, Food Aversion, and Feeding Disord...
