Have you fallen off your treatment plan?

We totally get it, especially in Montana. Summer gets busy, we start spending more time outdoors soaking up the long days and we are moving our bodies differently. All of these things are good things and we want to support you as you continue to enjoy all the summer endeavors.

A consistent treatment plan can do a few things:
- provide a reset button for your joints, nervous system and tight tissues
- enhance performance by providing more mobility and/strength
- keep you going… for those long days of driving, different sleeping accommodations and fun surf days on the lake

It’s simple, give us a call and tell us what your goals are and we will help provide the support your body needs this season.

Happy adventuring! 💃🏻🪂🤸🏌️‍♂️🏊‍♀️🏄🏽🚣‍♂️🚵‍♀️

THE MOMENT THAT ACL TEARS 😫

Two out of 3 times, it’ll be a noncontact injury. Isn’t that wild? (And women are up to 10x more likely to experience a tear.) To us, it means so much of the injuries surrounding ACL tears are quite likely preventable.

That’s why Riley has become certified in a new ACL prevention program that focuses on equipping the body to decrease the likelihood that this injury happens to you.

The program focuses on strengthening the body’s mechanics to protect the knee and is ideal for high school athletes, college athletes, runners, skiers and snowboarders, and those who have already experienced an ACL tear.

We’d love to tell you more about it for whoever is interested! Ask us the next time you’re in the clinic, or pop any questions you have in the comments below 👇

Congrats to all those that completed the ! ☘️

As this race kicks off the running season we wanted to ask you, RUNNERS, HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ABOUT YOUR GAIT? 🏃‍♀️🏃🏼🏃‍♂️⁉️

If you’ve ever had questions about your stride—such as foot strike, knee alignment, arch strength, ankle stability, hip drop—we can help!

We offer gait analysis through the clinic where we take a look at all these things. By having a professional observe your running mechanics, you can fix lingering issues and prevent major ones down the road.

Want even more out of your gait analysis? Our PTs can recommend exercises based on the weaknesses or imbalances they see in your stride.

With running season gearing up, now is the perfect time to get a professional opinion! Call the office, shoot us a DM, or ask us about our gait analysis next time you’re in the clinic!

Last week we talked a little about shin splints (spoiler alert: they’re really just tight calves). And we braved the question—why might your calves be tight?

While there’s always the outlier case, there’s the one that we see time and time again.

Poor alignment!

What do we mean by poor alignment? Usually it’s a domino affect that starts with the hips and tracks down. It typically breaks down like this:

• Hips are weak, and therefore uneven during a stride (each hip dips during the stride)
• These weak hips aren’t stabilizing the knee, causing it to cave in
• The ankle and arch collapse

When this happens, the calves start working overtime trying to lift that arch off the ground, and that ankle back into neutral. It means the muscle is in constant strain, which leads to tightness that can cause—you guessed it—shin splints.

Do you deal with tight calves? What’s helped? Tell us 👇

⚡️ LET’S TALK SHIN SPLINTS ⚡️

Or, more specifically, calves.

Shin splints can seem to be an all-too common byproduct of running. And often the advice people are given is to ice and maybe roll them out (if you’re a glutton for torture). And while this might alleviate some of the symptoms of shin splints, it doesn’t really get at the why.

And it’s the “why” that we’re interested in.

Usually, a shin splint problem is actually a calf problem. When the calf becomes too tight, the attachment areas where the calf muscle adheres to the shin bone begin to pull. These microtears create inflammation, leading to what we refer to as shin splints.

So if you’re fixing shin splints, turn your attention to the calf! Be sure to get in some good dynamic stretches before a run as well as some isometric stretching after. Of course ice, rolling out, and ibuprofen are still great tools for alleviating those symptoms.

Wanna really get into it? The next question is the real doozy: Why is the calf tight?

That’s another discussion for another day later this week. Check back for a further deep dive!

💙LET’S TALK FEBRUARY BLUES💙

With the appearance of Fool’s Spring last week, only to be swiftly escorted out by a massive winter storm, we thought we’d talk seasonal depression!

Seasonal affective disorder, or SAAD, is a very real thing that affects tons of Montanans. During the winter months in our beautiful state, we unfortunately receive a lot less vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D is essential to a balanced, healthy mind and body.

Without it, you can see a decrease in mood, as well as overall health!

A few symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are:

• Fatigue
• Not sleeping well
• Bone pain or achiness
• Depression or feelings of sadness
• Hair loss
• Muscle weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Getting sick more easily

These symptoms become especially noticeable when we DO get a spout of sunshine like we did this past weekend. Suddenly we feel like we’ve leveled up! This could be your body’s way of letting you know it’s craving that vitamin D.

While we love a good diet for natural sources of vitamin D, we (along with most doctors) also recommend considering a vitamin D supplement during the winter months.

There’s a ton of options out there, many of which are great, many not so much. We’ve poured into this research and carry only top of the line vitamin D supplements—along with many others—in our clinic!

If you haven’t been taking a vitamin D supplement, ask us about them at your next appointment! Despite what Fool’s Spring may have you believe, there’s still a good deal of winter left to go. So take care of your body!
