Nerd alert! My specialty group in ASHA for neuro people has its own journal, and they decided to do a forum featuring successful passing cases used as part of the ANCDS board certification process. The full issue is coming out soon but my article was released early online last week. The full forum is going to be so good - our field really needs high quality case studies and my colleagues have some incredible cases.

The publishing process was a lot of time, made my brain stretch (read: hurt), and was intense! It's mind blowing to think about people who publish tens to hundreds of works - truly a huge feat. It's the *best* feeling to get to contribute something. If you are dying to read about a parietal lobe injury, reasons to leave old aphasia theories/practices in the dust, or a fun intersection of theory and practice, it's a juicy read! 🧠🫶🏼

While the term "executive functioning" is definitely floating around out there, it is a nebulous concept to most...let alone executive function (EF) coaching! EF coaching can be part of a larger approach toward holistic management of ADHD (with or without medications). Also considering that each human being on the planet has a unique combination of EF strengths and challenges, it's also a service that could truly benefit anyone interested in enhancing wellness in this area.

Imagine if you suddenly experienced a change in the way your speech sounds. Can you imagine how it might feel if people made judgments about your cognitive function, your sobriety level, or other assumptions based just on how your speech sounds? Speech production issues can be extremely stigmatizing and greatly impact a person's confidence, even when "mild". When speech issues are sufficiently severe to affect the ability for others to understand, life independence and functions become greatly altered. In these slides there is information about how to support our loved ones and fellow community members with speech issues and some tips for navigating communication breakdowns. Please reach out with any questions! 🧠💞🫶🏼

When we see someone with aphasia struggling to communicate the first instinct is usually to help or rescue. This comes from a place of caring and empathy. However given that people with aphasia can usually "get there" or get a lot closer to what they intend to say with extra time or encouragement to try a strategy/workaround, our best intentions to relieve the person's struggle can inadvertently rob their opportunity to communicate.

See the slides below for some tips in this regard and please comment or reach out with any questions or insights! 🧠💞🫶🏼

People talk about "executive functioning"...but what is it exactly? Think of it as a collection of brain functions that allows us to reach goals.

What kind of goals are we talking about? Anything - as big as getting a degree, as complex as planning a big trip involving lots of people, or as everyday such as following through with your to-do list.

What is everything that goes into reaching a goal? Inhibiting distractions to remain on track for the goal...the skills to overcome obstacles to start something for the goal...the skills needed to complete the goal...planning...organizing...regulating emotions to avoid getting derailed...and so much more!

There are tons of strategies to enhance one's ability to follow through with all kinds of simple and complex goals! See below for some examples.

In Aphasia - a condition that affects the language areas of the brain (usually from stroke, brain injury, brain masses, or neurologic disease) - talking problems get all the glory. These are undoubtedly a huge part of suddenly living with difficulty communicating. AND...did you know that there is almost always some level of listening and/or reading comprehension problems in aphasia? I love the executive function coaching side of my practice! It brings so much joy to help clients feel empowered by increasing the sense of "agency" over brain function. Everyone has executive functioning strengths and weaknesses - I am strong in goal-directed persistence but struggle with time management. I hope you find the following strategies useful! 🧠💞🫶🏼
