Yesterday was a good day. A lot of firsts. It was my first bjj competition in almost 5 years. The first comp in China, the first since my neck surgery 2 years ago, the first in masters division, and first time to do a day before weigh-in and cut a large amount of weight. Although I only had 2 matches I was able to win both divisions (85kg and 77-120kg open weight) and prove to myself I can still do it at 38 years old. It was also very interesting to push my body with the weight cut, dropping from 93.5 to 84.5kg in 10 days, and then regain to 92kg 15 hours later. Turns out the science works...

I've had a history of inconsistent mind state at comps over the years, and I wasn't sure how I would perform yesterday, but everything went well and I am happy with how I showed up. Big thank you to all the training partners, coaches, and friends who helped me prepare.

Competition teaches us a lot about ourselves and I can't wait to do it again.

What a weekend of fights! Our athletes have had a never ending list of hurdles over the past few years, with this being the first time they got a (near) complete fight camp, and they didn't disappoint. Shanghai UFCPI went 7/8 with 6 finishes against Asia's best. So proud of all their hard work and discipline. Aside from the disciplined training, the coaching and performance staff have been on point in every area, from sports science, strength & conditioning, to sports medicine and nutrition, we left no stone unturned. Ofcourse it all centres around the martial arts, and the coaching staff have done a fantastic job preparing these guys for war.

Excited to see them perform in the second round of RTUFC in Singapore in a few months. Watch this space, future starts in the making 💪

It was also a pleasure to have the Vegas UFCPI staff out for the week, supporting and exchanging ideas. We definitely ordered too much food after the fights

This week was the 4th year we conducted the UFCPI Combine, assessing the technical and non-technical attributes of China's best up and coming MMA talent. We signed a bunch of new prospects, as well as continued the contracts with existing standouts. With the border now open, and more and more international competition stages available, 2023 should be a big year for Chinese MMA 💪

This week the Australian Institute of Sport released their best practice guidelines for making weight in weight category sports. I was one of several consulted throughout this project which has been several years in the making. Further, a significant portion of it is based on my PhD work which has either been included directly or modified based on discussions with other experts. The release features several resources aimed at athletes, coaches, support staff, practitioners and organisations. Check it out at the link in my bio or here:
